Default 67 mustang (please read, need some suggestions)

hello all, havent been on here in years since i had a 5.0 which was short lived but ive got a new semi-project now... its a 67 mustang fastback with afully built351 with a 5 speed (may be a tremec im not sure yet, i'll be playing in the garage tonight). im not a real buff on fords,i actually build watercooledVWs but they are absolutely beautiful and i do have quite the soft spot for them...

i dont have all the specs on what was put into this car since the owner (my fiances father) has passed away several years ago and it was his car so its just been sitting around the garage... its been driven and started regularly though. he had a ton of cars and always had them modified with an unlimited budget so i doubt that its nothing but the best parts.

list of current items to fix starting with the biggest ones first (input would be great on these please!!! )

1. no reverse while running and extremely hard to get in even when the vehicle is off so i don't know if its the tranny or the clutch needs adjustment... it may be related to #2 which is the...
2. rear end vibrations especially on the highway mainly while letting off the gas... shakes quite a lot... kind of sounds like possibly a loose driveshaft or just the overall rearend being loose.
3.power steeringis very very floaty with alot of play. need to adjust it badly and put back on the original steering wheel.
5. aftermarket gauges (tach is totally incorrect, temp gauge is always at max as well as fuel gauge <- it has a fuel cell so i doubt its even hooked up
4. trunk spring assembly busted and other minor cosmetic stuff... moldings, door hinges, and a few other little things, no big deal

I promise i will put up some pics a little later tonight

Also, I'm not sure what oil to put in this thing as it hasnt been changed since his death.

So anyone out there reading this, please post your advice on this vehicle as I want to maintain it properly

Welcome back and glad to hear you got yourself a new project.

Seems alot of people think the powersteering is "floaty", or overcompensating. I removed the PS from mine and opted for a manual steering adapter.

Nice. Your tranny having no reverse is probable the syncros being bad/broken. My friend has 280ZX with a T5 and it has the same problem. You have to yank as hard as you can to get it into reverse and when it's there, you have to hold on to it for dear life cause it will POP out hard as hell and throw the car into 5th. It's crazy.

Can't help you with everything, but I can offer something on the steering. I had a '68 that had the same problem you're describing. Turned out I had 2 things wrong - the power steering "pump" was shot and I had a bad ball joint. I know, it's not really a pump, it's more of a suspended ram. Anyway, you can get a rebuild kit for that to take care of that part of it. And for the ball joint, just spend the money and get a complete front suspension kit that includes new arms with new ball joints. Even if they are not bad, they are most likely very old and you won't be sorry.

Oh, and once you put the power steering back together - if the wheelbounces lock to lock when you start the car again, don't panic. Shut off the car and reverse the two hoses. Ask me how I know!

Hmmm, I wonder.... I hope you were lucky enough to have your hands out of the way when that one happened!

1 its probably a t5 and and reverse is not synchronized so try putting it in 5th then revers most 5.0 guys do this
2. probably a u joint jack it up and grab the shaft from both ends and see if it has play also check the tranny mount and last u can try rotataing the the d/s shaft a 1/4 turn and see if it solves the problem then andother 1/4 etc
3. probably need a rebuild the front end cause it is a 40 yr old car the p/s ram get worn and create slop along with the tie rods and the steering box(which you can adjust)

for the oil depends on the temp but during the summer heat 10-40w is good

well i know that driving an older mustang with power steering is very similar to driving a boat...in general the steering is pretty horrible. i would rebuild your suspention and stuff anyways though. oh and if your really bent on having good steering, flaming river makes a rack and pinion kit for around $1600. do you have any pictures??

+1 rebuild the front end and replace the power steering components and while your at it put disks on the front the car will steer perfectly and very very fast. and the brakes will help you get that 351 stopped. You will definately become addicted to mustangs if you give them a chance!!!

i
i dont really forsee having to rebuild anything as it was completely restored in 1999. its got everything. its just really in need of some TLC. whoever completed the restore didnt quite complete their job correctly as the owner (my fiances father, got sick and passed away)... it kind of fell to the wayside after that until now...
