Default Junkyard Shopping

What should I be looking for at the junkyard when I start trying to track down an engine? I need a tranny too but for now im concentrating on the engine.

Is this for your 67 coupe? If so, you would be very lucky to find a 289 that was the original V8 in your 67, so you will probably be looking to find a decent 302. If you can actually start up the engine and see if it is blowing smoke or has rattling valves you will also be lucky. Just ask the junk yard owner if he has a Ford 289 or a 302. Any 302 will work.

logic always told me if the car is smashed it was running when it got hit. if the body isnt messed up then SOMETHING else put it in the junk yard, and the engine may be done for.

food for thought

77 you and I share the same logic my friend. Ohh and if you meet some goofball at the junk yard that doesn't know a 5.0 is a 302 you may have to ask for one of those too.

That depends on where it was hit doesn't it? Think about a front end collision. What takes the brunt of the force imparted by the offending source? Also, God knows how many miles are on any engine you may pluck from a junk yard. There is no history of the car and how many miles it went because there is no title or registration. Like I said. If you can start the engine and see if it smokes or rattles, then you will be lucky, but I would not buy a used engine in a junk yard without the ability to start the engine.

well my thought was looking for a good rebuildable core....... but usally between looking at the level of damage to the body you could have a good idea of if it was bad enough to damage something or not. alot of times your simply unable to try and start a junkyard motor due to parts missing, or anything else. also you can obviously check the odometer.

odometer + appearance of engine (leaking pans and such) + condition of the vehicle = a pretty good idea of how well it ran or didnt.

anyways most yards give at LEAST a 30 day warranty which should be enough time to get it in the car and verify its condition.

I would also check craigslist. In socal there are usually two to three motors available everyweek. Sometimes real cheap ~200-300 bucks.

I had a 1951 Chevy that I sold in 1962. The problem with the car was that the #2 rod bearing was shot. It ran, but clacked.
Again, if you want to buy an engine from a junk yard that runs when you buy it, then you need to hear it run at the junk yard before you buy it.

i agree thats best (obviously)

it just from my experience its usually pretty hard to find a startable motor in a yard due to missing parts, car being smashed up, not having keys, etc so i wanted to give some pointers that increase the odds for success.

you dont need keys if its an oldschool carburated engine with points ignition, if all the parts are there then just take a good battery and some jumper wires, run one jumper wire from the + post on the battery to the + post on the coil, (ground the battery) then run the other wire to the starter (wire needs to be really heavy, like a jumper cable or something) if you can get gas into the carb and spark into the plugs then engine should hit a few licks at least, if you can get it to hit then try rigging up a small gas tank so you can let it run
