Default blue smoke

Hi, whenever my friends 67 mustang is started up, blue smoke shoots out of the exhaust pipe. Will old gas cause this? I know the gas hasnt been changed in a long time. If its not old gas, then what else could be causing this.. is it some kind of gasket in the engine. Thanks

its oil.... if its doing it after sitting only, its most likely the valve seals. they are low tech umbrella style rubber pieces that cost about .12 each - they can be changed on the motor if you use a spring compressor, and put compressed air into the cylinders to keep the valves from falling into the motor.

compressed air works, but so does a small piece of rope in the spark plug hole, turn the engine by hand until it snugs up against the valves, that oughta hold it

yup, and you can make your own valve spring compressor outta a thick piece of flat bar with a bend and a couple holes drilled thru it (actually easier to use than the rental style)

*edit* heres a crude drawing of a simple to make, easy to use tool...... should be a sticky in the "redneck tools" dept.
