speaker questions.
Anybody know how hard it would be to make speaker holes in my existing kick panels? I think the aftermarket ones they make are 5 1/2", which i have numerous of those laying around. So i should be able to just cut the hole in my old kick panels right?
the aftermarket ones look like theywarp the plastic outward where the speaker mountsto create some space behind the panel for the speaker
i took my oem kicksoff to take a look at doing this, but the metal is very close to the back of the stock kick panel so I didn't think there'd be clearance...not 100% but looked way close so the speaker'd probably need to be a surface mount if you use the oem panel

The 65/66 could barely fit a 4". You have very thick/reinforced metal in your kicks. You can pull the panel and look at the spot welds to see where the double metal is. Most cars have a very narrow spot to accommodate spks, not positive, but I bet 68's are the same. Many will do what royal68 says and space them out enough so you are only cutting a hole for the magnet to go through.
Its really worth just buying the aftermarket ones made for speakers. The standard ones have no depth to them.Speakers are based on magnets and generally speaking abigger magnet gives a better sound quality so you need the depth to make it worth it.
so even the aftermarket kick's built for speakers require the metal to be cut? I recall a small space where you can access the hinge bolts, but thats it - and I don't want to cut anything just for sound (like the V8 sound more anyway)
I've thought of just wiring up some boxes to sit on the back seat or floor w/ some plugs to detach quickly, very seldom anyones back there anyway

Aftermarketfront quarter panel (aka kick panel) speakers do not require any modification (sorry restomod guys, sit this one out) to install, no cutting. I got a pair in my 66 hardtop and put a pair in a 68 hardtop for a friend. They sound good, not great (like the 7 speaker 5.1 setup in my living room), just good. There are three grades: cheap, expensive and make your own. I assume a 69-70 set will also fit.
