Default 4-Speed Question

I have a '65 GT and I was wondering what transmission they came stock with, it's a 4-speed with the hurst linkage, so I just wanted to know if it came with the Toploader or not. Thanks in advance.

Top loaders were used in 1965 Mustangs as well as Borg-Warner T-10's. The 289 HP used a top loader only. In 1966, the top loader was to be used exclusively but production problems and a high demand for 4 speeds forced Ford to install the T-10.

Hello.Assuming that your car was built after mid-march of 65, which it would have to have been to be a factory 4-speed GT, it would have come with a top loader. The cast iron cased T-10s were used on the very early cars, the 64 1/2s, and were phased out in the fall of 64.The double-digit 65 Shelby GT-350s came with an aluminium cased T-10.Hope that helps.

In my 66 GT Fastback was a T-10 that was used to replace the original transmission that was beyond repair. I don't know what the original transmission type was, I didn't do the work, but the replacement had a VIN number on it, 6T07A170383, and it wasa HEK-AD type. The VIN number places the build date in mid December. Again, Ford had production problems withtransmissions and because of the high demand, installedthe B-W T-10 in Mustangs.

Thank you, it did help. I heard that the toploaders are pretty much invincible, is this true?

Not so fast Glen, how do you explain the HEK-AD 4 speed T-10 listed in the Ford Car Parts manual? And the T-10 with a Metuchin VIN on it?
