302 question !
I was wondering that since I am new with the whole motor thing, that if you guys can help me out and answer some of my questions. I just bought a 1966 mustang coupe and it has a 302 bored out 30 over, 4 bbl, flowmaster exhaust kit, edelbrock performer intake, hooker headers, B&M slap shifter, mild cam, 650 edelbrock carb and traction bars. I was wondering if this car is fast or not by your standards and what kinda brakes should i get if i need brakes since everything else on the car is stock. Thanks !
"Fast" is relative to any given individual. And if it's stock drums, yeah, you need stop fast paired with go fast. Otherwise you may go fast right into a wall cuz you couldn't stop fast. If the heads are stock heads(depending on year) then it's not anything special, but it'll run nice.
It doesn't really matter if its fast to us or not, it just matters if its fast enough to YOU. Everyone on here has a different need for speed. I prefer as much as my budget will allow... but then again I'm 19 lack the sense of some of the older guys on here... [sm=gears.gif]
Kevin, this is the third time you've asked if we think your car is fast. Will it beat a Camaro... what will it dyno... if it's fast... Man, you've got speed on the brain!
If you wantone old folks opinion, you need to worry a little less about how fast it is and more if it's gonna kill you are not. You've not had it that long, and these are OLD cars. Make sure the car has great (not good) brakes, good tiresand tight steering. These are the things you need to keep you alive. Invest in them first. You got plenty of time to make it faster later.
As for brakes, if you have front drums...you should seriously consider switching to front discs.

Like 67-302 said, "fast" is relative
1) 1/4 mile time
2) ability to fry rice at the traffic lights
3) blasting along some windy road
4) lap times
Me, I'm into 3 and 4. If someone offered me a set of Wilwoods or 100 extra hp, i'd take the brakes first every time.
what do you want to do with the car?

If you are obsessed with speed then I would suggest you spend some money on some three point seatbelts at the least. Most Mustang steering columns dont collapse and are sitting there like a sword waiting to impail you.
Like James said you need to make sure the car wont kill you if you plan on driving it fast.Make sure the brakes, tires, and steering are in very good shape.
I would also think about a suspension upgrade.
AND ABOVE ALL Drive it like you have some sense!! IF you want to see how fast your car is go to a track, dont try to find out on the highway. That car you could hit might have me in it!
