Cam and Stock Carb (is it possible)
so my friend has a 289(or so he says) and he wants to rebuild the motor so we are planning it and he wants the stock autolite 2100 carb on it but he wants a small cam in it so he came up with this comp cam and i came up with this one Clevite RV Cam so i want your oppinions and i am just probing the possiblility of getting a bigger 2100 bit for now all we have is the 1.08 its basically gunna be a DD but he want it off road every so often please help
i had no idea clevite even made cams, but i would get a solid roller cam and a rev kit, but a cam that has about a 1500-5500/6000 power band is awesome for daily driving and remember less duration = more bottom end greater duration = better top end i would say a .495 lift / 214-230 at .50 duration cam would be a good choice for him
Think about this, the cam will help the engine breathe better but that 2V carb restricts the breathing. Consider a 4V intake and carb, you got the engine stripped anyway.

Either of those cams are going to be more than that crappy 2100 450cfm can deliver on. Either get a peanut cam, or get a better carb. Don't get me wrong, the 2100's are dependable, but that carb will be virtually useless for anything over about 4,000-4,500rpm
hey i bought a transmission from that site you linked for the clevite cam LOL - those guys are cool.
and yeah, even a stocker 4bbl intake a carb would serve him 1,000 better

I'll be the oddball, as usual, and say go ahead and put the cam in with a stock 2100. Maybe he doesn't intend on operating his at wide open throttle all the time, which is the main advantage of 4 venturis over 2. Maybe he isn't looking for maximum H.P., but wants a healthy sound with some more ponies. I've used a cam very similar to the one mentioned, with a 2100, for several years. Great gas mileage, excellent driveability, and a slightly threatening idle. The stock cam is mighty boring, and this cam will make the car feel much stronger without losing any of the benefits of a simple, reliable carb.
The jets in my 2100 are .048 as I think, which is mighty small. Maybe they're .042, don't recall for sure. The venturis are 1.08", which is the same as an Autolite 4100 for smallblocks. People do say that the throttles on a 4 barrel are smaller than a 2 barrel, but it's not a hard and fast rule. It depends on the 4 barrel. The Autolite 4300 4 barrel (for smallblocks) has smaller primaries, and you certainly can get good mileage from one. A Holley 600 cfm carb has much larger primaries, with size 66 jets (at least on the one I had), and it got crappy mileage. I'm not familiar with the Edelbrock 4 barrels, but I'm kinda thinking they use metering rods, which would make it hard to compare. I've had my Mustang for 29 years, have had numerous different carbs, 2 and 4 barrel, and the 2100 I'm currently using is far and away the nicest running and most reliable of the bunch. It sounds to me like this guy just wants to change his cam, for whatever reason, and it will certainly work with the 2100.
its for a old bronco so nothing over 4500 probably but it will be a daily driver also so it will be doing atleast 70-75 mph on the highway and no real serious off roading either
If it's for a Bronco get a truck cam, it'll be better matched to the gears/vehicle weight/tire size etc. And for a Bronco, 450cfm and a little 4x4 cam would work nice, since a Bronco ain't a hot rod
