Transmission Q's
Guys,
I think I am having tranny problems.
I have a 65 289 with a 3 speed C4. The car usually goes in gear very easily, but sometimes it seems to lose its gear when I stop. (It feels like I shifted to neutral) If I rev it a little and wait it usually kicks right back into gear. The fluid level is a little high and the fluid is really nasty brown.
I'm thinking of doing a fluid and filter change as well as adding some lucas transmission fix. Is there a possiblity my bands are loose or is my tranny more then likely shot.
Thanks,
Parker

Yea you definitly need to change the filter and fluid. And make sure to use Type F (not 100% sure, i forgot) Automatic Transmission Fluid, that's what these old trannys have to use.

I would do the fluid change a.s.a.p.
speaking of that trans. I have an issue where the shifter seems off,When i put it into reverse, the indicator is in the N, How can i adjust it so that it is on the R for reverse,N for nuetral, and so on.

Does the T handle wobble from side to side? If so, you may need to replace the bushings (2 reqd, NPD $1.99 each) in the base of the shifter, and possibly do an adjustment on the shifter to transmission rod. And it's type F. And go to a transmission shop to change the fluid and adjust the bands.

You might want to check your bands and see if they need tightening. Here is how you do it.
INTERMEDIATE BAND
1: remove and discard locknut and install a new one (more than just a good idea here folks)
2: torque adjusting screw to 10ftlbs. (thats the one inside the nut, not the nut itself)
3: Back off adjusting screw exactly
a. 1 1/2 turns on 1964 C4
b. 1 3/4 turns on 1965-1981 C4
4: Hold adjusting screw from turning and tighten locknut
LOW REVERSE BAND
1: loosen lock nut several turns
2: torque adjusting screw to 10ftlbs
3: Back off adjusting screw 3 full turns
4: hold adjusting screw from turning and tighten lock nut
