Default Leaf spring question?

Im replacing my worn suspension all the way around. When it comes to new leafs what should I use ( stock 4, 4 1/2, or 5 leafs) Im also going with mid-eyes to give it a little drop. I usually have 2 people in the back, plus Im adding a subwoofer enclosure, amp racks and trimming the trunk out to match the interior. Thanks

Leaf selection depends on what you want out of your car. The original 4 leaf will actually lift the car in many cases becuase the current leaf springs sag. The make 1 1/2" lift, original height, mid eye(1-1 1/4" drop) and reverse eye(2"). Adding leafs will make it stiffer. Most on the market are 4, 4 1/2, and 5, but I have seen setups between 1 and 7. If you are lowering and planning on some weight in the back, you might want to consider 5. This will make the ride abit more rough though.

Hi,

I have a 66 and I am doing the same thing. I talked to some of the sales guys and they told me that it depends on what kind of ride I want. I am going with the stock replacement springs because I didn't want too stiff of a ride and my 66 is going to be a daily driver so the 5 leaf would have been too much. Hope this helped. Let us know what you decide.

D

My Mustang is in the shop right now, and I decided on the 4 1/2. I get it back tomorrow, and will let you know how it rides.

I put the stock 4 leaf springs on mine and the ride height is level with the front. I also upgraded to KYB shocks. It is rare that anybody rides in the back seat, but this is how the car was equipped from the factory so I don't foresee two people weighing enough to bottom out the rear.

I have a 68 convertible that I put 5 leaf mid eyes in. I plan on taking people with me, 4 adults in the car and did not want to have rubbing problems. My original stock springs rubbed with 3 in the car. It was rather annoying. 5 Leafs may be overkill but being lowered and running 18's out back I did not want to risk reliving the annoyance again. I don't mind if it is a little firmer ride though, it will just make me appreciate my other cars and not drive the mustang fast over speed bumps.

Go to Flex-A-Form.com and look at their single-leaf fiberglass springs. No stiction (sticking friction) and you save about 30 lbs. of unsprung weight...per side.

how's your front set up? are you planning on leaving the old shocks in the rear? what sort are they and what condition? What sort of driving do you do in your car?

you need to consider the whole package...if you have soft front springs and/or wornold shocks, then add stiff rear springs all you will achieve is terrible handling.

I have 5 leaf reverse eye and heavy duty gas shocks on the back of mine and the ride is very firm even with passengers (rarely). The front is also very firm. I would change it if the car were a daily driver.

I have 4.5 leaves (leafs?) Ride is stiffer than when I had the old suspension in, but soft enough for me. I didn't want alot of sag because of the big tires I wanted.

I am doing a whole package. Im putting in new upper and lower control arms in front with new bushings, 620 springs, newsway bars, tie rod ends and new KYB shocks all the way around. I was just trying to figure out what leaf springs to use with passengers and a sub box.
