289 Head/Cam Help
I thought I would ask here, as I am sure some of you have done this, discussed it, and came up with a best combo. I went back 9 pages on these boards, and didn't find this question...My apologies for bringing up a subject that has probably been done a million times.
My engine had an average rebuild (nothing special) about 9 years ago. I bet the engine doesn't have 5000 miles on it since it was redone. But, it has sat for most of that time, only being started one every few months or so and allowed to warm up.
I want to change it over to a 5 speed (it's now a C4, rebuilt...anyone wanna trade for something?) and change the heads and cam. I currently have an Edelbrock Performer intake and a 600cfm (I think) Holley 4 barrel on it. What cam and heads play well together...my budget is $1500-$2000 for parts. I do not drive this car often, I really don't care about driveability as much as I do a good lope, and I would prefer to go more to the performance side as opposed to the daily driver side, if you get what I mean.
I don't have power brakes (on purpose) so vacuum isn't much of a concern. The engine has standard pistons, no extra notching for valves, and I probably won't change that. I have the stock rockers, will they do, or do I need to replace those and the pushrods?
I am 31, played with cars my whole life, but never have "Gotten into a motor" myself. I will have this done by a reputable shop, what else may I want to purchase to bring to them before doing this swap? Head and header gaskets I assume, what else?
Thanks so much for your time. I really appreciate everyones great attitude on here, it makes playing with this car so much more fun!

well first i'll say you should do it yourself, that will cut your pricetag in half and its NOT rocket science.
trick flow twisted wedge, afr 165's, canfield 170's, or some RHS heads would be good brands/models to look into. you'll need roller rockers and some hardened pushrods. a cam and lifter kit is 200 bucks or less, for streetability i'd be shooting for something thats hyd. not solid/mechanical - and around the .500 lift range give or a take a little.
obviously this is all total ballpark, but it gives you an idea of what to research

These edelbrock alum. heads are what I went with on my rebuilt 302and I am a happy camper. I also have a 600cfm carb and performer intake. I have great low end and pulls hard through 6,400 rpm
. Here is the spec card for the cam I have. I use this car as a DD (don't get me wrong she's a beast) so I wanted to have a decent idle rpm. I think if I had gone any larger with the camit wouldn't idle too good making it less fun to drive. Warm idle is about 800 - 850 rpm. I will dyno her after another 1000 miles and post results. Good luck

Here I go again:
Holley vacum 600
Tri-Y's
F4B or equivalant manifold
Crane Fireball-I or that Summit cam the guy listed the computer power profile of
This will work with your stock heads and GLH to 6000 rpm plus get respectable mpg.
If you do change the heads I'd go for GT40-P...cast iron, no thermal expansion problems, designed to work in the rpm range your motor will live at. CHEAP to buy...there is a set local for 275$ asking price.

I spoke to the machine shop about my engine....and I am afraid.
I do not understand the terms he used when discribine what my engine was.
I was not about to ask him what he ment...because I didnt wanna look stupid...
But...I have no problem looking stupid on the forum...so here it goes.
Can someone define the following phrases:
Peanut Cam?
Popcorn Heads?
I think thats right...might be backwards....might be popcorn cam and peanut heads...I dont know.
I want a simple stock rebuild, with a little more cam...thats it....I want a daily driver engine that can smoke the tires when I want to, but not something I have to adjust every weekend.
