Default Painting interior trim

How would you recommend masking the tiny strips of chrome on the gauge panel and glove box so I can paint the black portion?
I thought I heard that you can put a little oil or vaseline on the chrome, then paint, and after it dries just wipe it off. Has anyone tried this?

thanks

I did it, at least the glove box door. Get a new instrument cluster. For the door, take it off and mask away. Now it's going to become obvious that there are a few things in the way; the latch will come off real easy; the hinge as well (as long as there is paint in the can, use it); the pony on the front. Remove the pony and give to someoneand then buy a new one (NPD $7.95).

When I painted my interior I stripped as much trim out as I could. When I painted my instrument cluster I used the fine line masking tape and regular tape as well. Everything on your car will come out. If you take it out and do it right it will show.

You can buff the chrome with 000 steel woolon the glove box door to remove overspray and minor crud. On the plastic instrument panel, if you buff with anything other than Fantastic or hand soap, it's bye-bye finish.
