tremec 6 speed
I went over to a guys house this morning to look at a few cars. He ended up showing me a tremec 6 speed that came out of a supercharged mustang. The car burned up and all he had left was the tranny. It seems aweful long to fit into a classic. It had a plate about mid way to move the shifter. Will these work in a 68 and is it worth $650? Is it the same to install this as it would be to install a 5 speed?

You might be able to pull some useful info from eitherhere orhere. Basically, I think you're in for lifting the tunnel over a little bit longer section than you'd have to for a 3550 5-speed. Apparently, there's a crossmember mod involved in addition to the usual driveshaft work.
Hopefully you'll get some expert suggestions on how to evaluate thecondition, both from previous use/abuse and from the fire (too hot, for too long, sounds like possible case distortion to me). I'd at least want to watch the fluid as it's beingdrained out.

if thats of an 03-04 cobra then the bell housing is for a 4.6 abnd wont match up ,
if you can remove the bell housing you can get a spacer and then the custom trans mount, then its just getting the drive line modified.
it is only worth it if the bell housing is removable ! ! ! ! !
i just did a t5 swap into a 67 stang

Its a T56, and if it was out of a supercharged car it would have been an 03/04 Cobra and ys it is worth every penny if it runs well and you can get it for $650, I paid $1300 for mine. The mid plate is not for relocating the shifter. Did it look like this:

it is about 3" longer than a T5, the input shaft is the same length and for a Cobra will have the same 10 splune clutch.

There is an adapter bellhousing to mount the T56 behind a sbf engine. I made my own adapter to mount the tranny to the lakewood bellhousing in the first picture. I installed it in my 66 coupe, had to cut the trans tunnel some:

My drive shaft is much shorter than my T5 driveshaft. I also had to use a different slip yoke, and fab up a new tranny crossmember. Oh, if you have an X pipe or H pipe you will need modify your exhaust to clear the crossmember. I had the Magnaflow 3" kit and had to make some modifications to get it all to fit. With the Cobra tranny I think you can use the regular 302/351 pilot bearing.
