Sound advice from all. For what it's worth I would yank it out and rebuild it....but I do in fact have a "sneaky pete" referred to earlier. They are a life saver doing warranty work at a dealership.
Exactly how does this sneaky petething work? Is it the rope trick?

I think I'm going to go ahead and try the mustangsteve way and not remove the engine for now. I only wish this started leaking a year from now whenthe money is availablefor body and engine work.

Inspect the crank where the seal rubs. If it has a groove that you can feel, even a new seal may not be able to develop enough contact pressure to keep the oil inside. There may be a thin repair sleeve that you can install to restore the crank sealing surface.

Glen - the "sneaky Pete" tool is still available (Lisle). Link with pic.

Does your car still have the stock 289? The reason I ask is that if you have a later engine, the engine may not use the "rope seal" at all, it could use the rubber seal.

Just somthing to keep in mind.

A sneaky pete is basically a corkscrew made of wire that is flexible. You "screw" it into the main seal and yank it out.

Way back in 1966, I had a '59 Ford Fairlane with a leaky rear seal. The mechanic used the "Sneaky Pete" to replace it. I watched him and it didn't seem too difficult. It is also used to install the new seal.

There used to be a tool called a sneaky pete. It allows you to replace the seal by just pulling the rear main cap. I have not heard of one in 23 years though. Call around and see if there is a way to replace it by just pulling the main cap.

i used one of those on my rebuild last year, not that hard to use just hard to hook the seal and pull it around the crank, only took a few trys
