frickin trunk rods
well after quite a bit of searching, I am saying "uncle" - can anyone tell me the secret to getting the trunk rods on? I put them in and it looks like they are in right but there isn't enough tension to keep the lid up. I took the lid off to paint it and when I took it off and sat it down it got knocked and the rods sprang apart.................. Also, I lost the little piece that screwed into the the package tray area and held the 2 rods up - anyone just using the rods without the piece - one of the guys at the mustang shop told me that he doesn't use it?
I saw some pics in my searching but any help here would be great, thanks.

I had the same problem - tore my hair out. The simple answer is that they are reversed. Believe it or not, the right and left can be installed reversed and look right but don't tension up. Swap them and enjoy!
We just discussed this yesterday. Here's that thread.

thanks guys, I saw Soaring's pics last night and couldn't discern the difference with mine...... I will try swapping them tonight, if that is the case - this should be FAQ (I saw tons of posts searching last night and no solutions, if this works 68sprint is the man
)

[align=left]Did the coils come out mid production? I have a 68 and it has the rods. Maybe I have a early 68? Reguardless, I popped a rod (in the trunk) and I played hell getting it back in[8D] Come on guys, get your mind out of the gutter!

Another possible solution if originality isn't an issue, and if you have a 67, is to swap out the hinges with the coiled spring type used in 68. They work SO much better.
