someone please help!
so i took my 66 mustang back to the engine builder today, to see if he knew what the squeak/ticking noise was coming from. he said it wasnt coming from the motor. he said it could be one of 2 things, the starter, which i just replaced and went with everyones opinion to go with automatic starter for my manual car, and it works great. he said it could be too long and hitting the back and making the noise? or he said it could be my throw out bearing? any ideas? it is weird, when i start the car up cold, i dont hear the noise, but after it runs for about 20-30 seconds i hear it? any advise would be greatly appreciated! thanks
Hello.
If the noise doesn't change when you are pushing in the clutch, it almost certainly isn't a throwout bearing noise. I can't help but wonder why in the world you would want to put a starter for an automatic in your car that has a manual transmission. Maybe there's some trick that I've never heard of, and it wouldn't be the first time for that, but that doesn't seem to make any sense.

Yeah, the starter that you order for a manual transmission doesn't fit in a 65. You have to get an automatic starter for a manual transmission mustang. I know it doesn't make sense, but it works. I learned that many years ago when I first replaced the starter in Ol' Yeller. Now, you must have an idiot for a mechanic if he can't distinguish the squeak coming from the starter area or the clutch area of the car. Those two items are on opposite sides of the engine. Get a long screwdriver and put the business end on the starter with the engine running and put your ear on the handle and see if you can hear the squeak coming from the starter. I bet you a dollar to a hole in a donut the squeak is not coming from there.
Like Veronica said, if it is a throwout bearing, then the squeak will be constant. Put your head in the engine bay near the Master Cylinder with the engine running and see if you hear it squeaking from that area. If so, you can adjust the clutch pedal so that the bearing quits squeaking.

It is my understanding that some where in the dark ages when the parts numbers were being put into the computer that the automatic and manual starter parts numbers were switch and this mistake has remained in the system. So to get a manual starter you need to ask for an automatic starter and vice versa! Do not know why the glitch was never fixed and do not know if this applies to all the stores data bases. However, it is a common issue. So.... you are using a manual starter - the store just called it the wrong thing.
I agree that you shouldn't need a very long mechanics career to tell the difference between starter and throw-out bearing noises. Probably not what you wanted to hear after you gave the guy a bunch of bucks to rebuild your engine.
