Default top loader and low gears

Well now that I have everything, I will start to piece things together. At present I have 411 gears in my 9". With my C4 3 speed automatic it really tachs out to where I hate taking it on long drives. I'm wondering if there will be a difference with the toploader. Is the 4th gear 1:1? Would it be the same as my 3rd gear in the C4?

It might drop a couple hundred rpm on the high side since youre eliminating the slip of the torque converter, but basically engine rpm will be the same. Both transs have a 1:1 top gear. Unless you already have everything to go with a manual, its probly easier to either put in some 3.50 cogs, or go with an AOD.

You speak of the gear vendors unit http://www.gearvendors.com/hrford3s.html
Good piece but for the price, you could swap in an AOD transmission AND new rear gears.

4th gear on the toploader is 1:1 just like 3rd gear. Either a 5 speed or an AOD is the only way you are going to drop the RPMs. You now have a go quick car for around town, but you will need to take a wheel barrow full of money to buy gas if you take a long trip.

Not to mention the extra wear on the engine. I'm turning about 3,500rpm @ 65mph with my toploader and 3:50 gears. I'm gonna switch them out for 3:25 sooner then later.

Get a TKO 500 or 600, or somehigher gears. You really don't need 4.11's unless you have an engine that goes to 7k rpm, otherwise you pull out of your powerband quickly and end up in a higher transmission gear that's reducing power to the wheels. You'd be suprised how fast you can go with even a 3.00 or a 3.25 gear and the right setup. Gears like anything else have to match the combo you have. 4.11's with a stock cam or 2.79's with a drag race cam don't make much sense
