what would you put in your '65

Pretty much, factory there are 2v and 4v heads, the 4v heads have bigger ports, and the valves might be bigger as well. 2v heads are great for street, and 4v heads are great for wild street and race. It's the only head Ford ever produced in years past that was worth a crap without having to "massage" it.

does this go for all years?

Yup, not many were produced, and it was originally developed by Ford to be an awsome high performance engine, but it came out right before the gas crisis/oil embargos of the early 70's when American muscle fell rapidly out of favor. The end result, was there wasn't any factory momentum behind it to truely develop it to it's full potential. Now all the support that exists for it is somewhat limited, and as such, pricey. But man, you put some decent parts into a Cleveland even with stock heads and boy does it come alive. That's the nice thing about the CHI heads, combines the best of the Cleveland family(the heads) with the aftermarket/factory support of the 351w.

I vote 351C because 1 for 1 vs a 351w you will be better off. Dodgestang and Opentracker have 351C based engines in their 65s without cutting the shock towers. I have a 408W with 2v C heads and did have to notch the shock towers quite a bit. I think the wow factor with a 351C is greater than with a 351w.
shake the 351c was made for less years and cant be stroked as far as a 351w and the 351w was in the f150 tell 97 thats why they are cheaper more of them around.can do the best of both worlds 351w block 351c heads
Windsor. Little more 'wolf in sheeps clothing' though the C would be interesting.
But personally I'd probably run a 289/302 myself. Plenty streetable, light, not too miserable on gas if you
build it correctly...I just like em.

and why?...
and why?...
That said, I do believe that the "C" motor was a better, stronger, and more efficient design than the W, (I am a big fan of canted valves, and 4 bolt blocks).
As for those folks who have decided to go the extra mile byshoehorning the "C"engines into early Mustangs, I offer much respect,, like wow, good job!
351 W. is a tight fit, One extra inch of deck height does not sound like much, but it makes a huge difference.
