Seat Belt Question
When I bought my '69 it had front shoulder three point harnesses. From pictures that I have seen of Mach 1s with the console, it looks like these cars orginally can with lap belts. When I go out and look for orginal style seat belts, all I find are shoulder belts. Does anyone know what kind of belts orginally came in the Mach 1s? Where can I get replacements for those belts? NPD and Year One only show shoulder belts.
Thanks,

I found some factory orginal seat belts on ebay for a 69 mustang. It looks like they have a shoulder harness of some sort for the front seats. After reading a little more, I found some people with 68s that have should straps that connect in as kind of an add on strap. Anyone know for sure what the deal is with these shoulder straps/3 point harnesses? Did 69 sportsroofs have shoulder straps?
Hey all:
I have a 1968 Coupe that have the factory 3-point seat belt system., I was only for the front two seats. It was the first year it was anoption in 1968. I am not sure when it became standard equipment.

I think the shoulder belt was an add-on.You had to order it when you ordered your car.I have a friend with a 70 boss that came with the shoulder harness that clipped into the lap belt .
My 70 fastback didnt have the shoulder harness but the mount for it is there.

If you are looking for original seat belts try www.ssnake-oyl.com/They replate the chrome, replace the webbing and rebuild the rubber and plastic. They also sell their products but apply a core charge. Give them a try.

The issue of when manufactures implemented various safety features is somewhat fuzzy. Here is one site that gives a timeline:
http://inventors.about.com/gi/dynami...atbelthistory/
If you look through the information you will see the US was really slow with safety requirements.
Some key dates and events:
1964 - About half the U.S. States require seat belt anchorages at front outboard
Most U.S. manufactures provide lap belts at front outboard seat positions
1965 All U.S. manufacturers providing lap belts in front outboard positions
1967
U.S. manufacturers provide lap belts at rear outboard positions (MY 1967)
NHSB issues initial Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 208, 209, setting standards for lap and shoulder belts in front outboard positions, lap belts in all other positions (to take effect 1/1/68 and 3/67, respectively)
1971
NHTSA amends FMVSS 208 to require passive restraints in front, to be effective 1973
1972
NHTSA requires anchorages for (detachable) shoulder straps for rear outboard (FMVSS 210)
1974
NHTSA requires 3-point belts (i.e., non-detachable shoulder straps) in front outboard positions
----------------
If you look through other web sites you will get slightly different dates. For example, lap belts for the front outboard positions were required in 1968.
I know my 68 did not come with shoulder belts and I couldn't find an attachment point when I had the headliner out.
