Default engine rebuild

I need advise on getting my engine rebuilt. I just bought a 73' fastback with a 302 and i would like to get it rebuilt. Should i pay someone to rebuild my engine or do it my self. I have limited engine experience, but i have many friends who are willingto help. I have looked around and the best deal i have found is 895 plus tx to rebuild my engine. is that good or not? maybe some help with what parts to buy would be a great help. Thanks

I've seen plenty of people on here say that this book is very helpful, and at 20 bucks its cheaper, as long as you have the time you should be fine.

Do it yourself.. You will learn sooo much about the motor.. And its really not that hard if you have a decently priced machine shop in your area.. Depending on what you want to do also...

Cost will be determined by what you want to do with it. Rebuild it so it runs like a stock 73 302, or do you want performance? That's where things start to get pricey

I do most of my own work as far as repairs and add ons but for the complete build I took it to the shop. For me it would take months to get it done with my schedule. I don't like things apart that long. Parts get lost or can't remember where they go. When I did my interior I took a few days off so I could strip everything out and put everything back in at once.

One more thing is the mechanic will warranty his work. You have to cover your mistakes if you build it. Do you trust yourself and your friends? If so go for it. It will be a good experiance that you will always remember.

Hub caps? maybe. Trailer hitch?!? "NO". Looks like a great project car.

One more thing, not a big deal but Ford only made a fastback in 67 and 68.

65-66 = 2+2
67-68 = Fastback
69=73= Sportroof

If you have a good support system, then a self rebuild is always an option. Just be aware of the details, details can make or break a rebuild proces. Get a couple of good books on the subject, and learn your engine well before proceding.

BUT,,, at the same time the price you were given was pretty cheap, you would have a hard time doing a self rebuild for this even if you don't need to buy any rebuild tools whatsoever. The price given is so low that I would expect the rebuild to "require a little more work" than was quoted, and the price to rise by the time the rebuild is done. I would expect thefinal bill to be closer to $1,500 to $1,800.

(ie: we had to deck the block and heads, we had to install new valve guides and seats, etc., etc.

I am not saying that the shop will screw you by doing wok that is not neded, I am saying that the estimate might be a bit optimistic.

figure 850 on machine work which includes a valve job, resurface, crank regrind, rod recondition, block bore/hone, block resurface, cam bearing install, pressing new pistons on the rods, and some cash accounted for misc broken bolts, guides, seats, etc.

250.00 for a complete (stock) rebuild kit from northernautoparts.com using quality parts. includes everything down to new freeze plugs and a new cam/lifters - shipping and moly ring upgrade calculated into price

50 bucks at your local auto parts store for a couple cans of carb cleaner, some shop towels, some oil/stp for assembly lube, permatex, and some engine paint.

1150 bucks and you have a 100% correctly rebuilt stock motor.
1500 gets you better pistons, better oil pump, hard oil pump driveshaft, stronger rod bolts, better timing chain, better cam, and a balance job

there you go [8D]
