Default Clev 4v Head Casting Nbrs

Couple of quick questions for the Clev Heads guys.

I'm trying to do 2-things here:

I'm trying to determine the valve sizes for a D3ZE 4v head. I could only find this number on one head, the other headwas not readable. I know they changed to a smaller size but am not sure what year. The heads currently do not have valves in them.

Also, there are other casting numbers that are different on each of the heads. Head 1 has 3A11 and the other is 3A23. Are these a matched set or does the different nbrs indicate just a different mold or plant? I could only find the D3ZEon one head, the other headwas not readable.

Any thoughts?

These are going on my 408c stroker project if they are a matched set.

Thanks in advance

Do they both have the 4 in the corner by the valve cover? Not sure on all the numbers but they are 73s. In 73 everything was detuned and downsized. I'm not sure if the 4v heads wre available that year.

i show a D3ZE-AA as a CJ head with a 73-76cc chamber, 2.19/1.71 valves, and a 2.50" x 1.75" intake opening. thats according to my high performance ford engine parts interchange book (the george reid book)

anyways, its a large chamber 4 bbl head, the earlier 4 bbl heads have a 61-64cc head. just guessing but a 408 with approx 70 cc heads sounds like a flat-top piston motor, 10:1 sounds close (completely random guessing here but it sounds like a good ballpark number)

hope that helps, should be a wicked build.

Yep, both are 4v. 4v's were avail in 73 on the Q-code Clev.

Just trying to make sure the heads are a matched set. The guy said the chambers looked like the same size. I haven't seen them myself yet.

i can only speak for the D3 casting head, you need to get a difinitive answer to what casting the other head is.

He didnt say anything about them being -AA. I wasnt sure if there was more than one type of 4v head in 73 but that should be it. I thought thay were only avail on the Q-code which fits what you posted.

My builder is thinking we should keep it at a max of arounf 9.5:1 on the comp for streetability. Seems to know his stuff. He's not a "Ford" guy but said looking at the heads, the exaust seems too small for the size of the ports and the intake valve. He was thinking we should possibly put larger exaust valves in.

Thanks for the info, it's appreciated!

alot of heads will technically have a -AA or similar at the end, basically dont worry about that part of the number.

9.5:1 is ok, but as long as you are running premium pump gas (which anyone building a motor like that should be) you should be able to attain the proper timing with a 10:1 motor just fine. also, the restriction on these heads is in the fact that the intake ports are actually too big - but with 400 cubic inches to help suck air down that becomes less of an issue than it was on a 300 cubic inch motor

Here is a pretty good website that gives the differences between 351C heads, their casting numbers, and some specs.
