I've wanted to try rally racing for so long, it looks like so much fun (especially when they roll the car)! I wish it was more popular in the US.

SCCA has a "rallycross" program underway that might be a good place to get started. Depending on the region, it may be more accessible. Think autocross on dirt, and hitting pylons/missing gatesrather than trees/ditches/worse while you're building up your experience. Get a little seat time in at the lower speeds first, then move up.

My guess? It isn't particularly spectator- or TV-friendly. You can't see much of the course, and it takes a considerable time to determine a winner (people here aren't that patient). If you're not already interested in it you aren't likely to just stumble across an event and hang around to watch.

Years ago, I was heavily involved in time-speed-distance rallying. For legal reasons, it was "officially" a non-speed event. But it was entirely possible to make (or at least allow for without event scoring penalty) the speeds quite brisk at times. I can't imagine lots ofpeople here tramping through the woods to watch one car per minute pass by.

I think more recently there have been fatalities here in performance rallying, and that's never a good thing.

Man that all looks awesome, Hell I'd be happy to just slide the car on a curve.

i love rally racing but its never really on TV that much. i think the reason its not so popular here has to do with the type of cars that are driven, i dont think a lot of people here like to watch those little 4 bangers. im thinking if you put those dirt track race cars (or something similar to that) on a mountain course it would probably be more sucessful here. but anyways that video is insane, oh and dont think his wing is big enough
that little 4 banger is punching close to 600hp.
