Default Need FMX/C4 and 9" Help

Ok, i just bought my dad a 1962 Ford Galixie with a 352/FMX/9" and i love driving the car, but it needs some more go. I am planning on a 475HP 351, But im not sure on the tranny, Should i buy a C4 for $80 and add a shiftkit/stall, or will the FMX take the power? Anyone know what the 9" has in it stock for the Galixie? I would like 4.10's and a nice locker but it seems like its a ton more for the 9". Any help thanks

Unless you have overdrive I would advise against 4.10 gears. Def. not for highway use, or much more besides drag racing. I would suggest 3.55, 3.70 or 3.89gears. Stick with the 352, that is a BB, and pump some more horses out of that. The FMX is a pretty good tranny however, parts are hard to find. There are shift kits and overhaul kits available for the FMX though. If anything get a C6.

That's a very smart question to ask. Define your needs/goals for the car, then set up a plan to build the car that way. You may decide that you can build up the 352 FE series big block, replace it with a larger FE-series motor, or go with something else entirely. But decide what you want before ripping it apart or buying parts.

The '62 Ford is a pretty car, and you don't see many of them around since the 63-1/2 & 64 models are more popular. Nice find! The rear-end is most likely 3.00:1 or taller, non-LSD 9". Like the previous poster said, don't do too short of gears (at least for a street car).

EDIT: Oops! I just re-read that you bought it for your Dad. Consult with him on how to build the car so he's part of the process.

The 352 big block was rated at 220 hp.

Why swap in a small block? (I'd stick with a big block, and consider a built C6)

The FMX can hold up to it, but I really doubt that you will be getting 475 horse out of a 351 unless you build it beyond what I would consider practical for the street (IE some 8,000 rpm single plane no idle nightmare).

375-420hp would probably be more realistic.

You can have Jay at Broader performancerebuild your FMX with Kevlar bands and such for about $900.

For the rear end, 3.25's or 3.50's....maybe 3.70 or 3.89's if you plan on running very tall donk wheels or something goofy like that.

From what I have learned about the FMX tranny,, Its pretty much indestructible up to about 500hp.. Other than that, I dont know much about them.. I should though, being that I have one.

I do all work myself. It would be a Weekend car and hopefully a showcar. I have been trying to find an engine to build for my mustang for the past year and everyone says, why build up a big block for more, when you can get the same power cheaper from a small block. But now you guys got me thinkin. What would be a good FE Engine to rebuild? Year? I just did a 390 at school, a 352 doesnt seem like its worth it to me. Will the heads be able to withstand massive porting? I can get parts from a junkyard by my cabin for almost nothing. I also was wondering about the c4 because whenever i ask someone what they got its always a built c4, are perfromace parts cheaper for them over a c6? Thanks for all the help

I think that the C-4 was just the more produced tranny ,, I know that the FMX didnt really get into that many cars and thats why you dont see it as much.. but the C-4 was used for ever...

my only question would be how far can you bore that 352 im not sure if all the fe's have the same block wall thickness but if they are you can have a 428 or bigger. for heads id fine some cobra jet heads do some porting youll be fine if you keep the fe id use a c6 mostly since its just like a c4 but bigger.
