you need it hooked up, the vacuum advance helps your car get up and go - it also gives you brtter gas milage.

what do you mean by a "clickin sound"??

yeah it makes a ping sound.. like if you have the timing off... he told me the timing was at 42degrees and he droped it down to 9 degrees.. he said the vacuum advance needs tighter centrel curve on the distributor. what do you know about that... he said because the distributor i have which is a new stock one he cant. i have to get another one. thanks for the time

Sounds like you could use an adjustable vacuum advance kit. Basically this mechanically limits the amount of vacuum advance that can be added by the vacuum diaphragm. Check over at CraneCams.

Ok I may be reading this wrong and norm and my77 have better knowledge than me but you need vaccuum advance to have the car running good the problem when changing the carb is what vacuum to use, more specifically were to find it. I think you will have a vacuum advanced dizzy on your car and not mechcanical (which i don't know much about) therefore you need a timed vaccum port and not a manifold vacuum port as you need different vacuum at different revs, i.e. no vac on idle vac on higher rpms.

9 degrees is ok for static timing (at idle) and 42 sounds ok on advance to me so i think you may have misheard the guy or he is talking rubbish, as I doubt your car would have 42 degrees of static timingit probably would notrun at 42 degrees static timing. I hear someone trying to get some cash of you for no reason.
