302 heads
so i have a few questions. i bought a 302 off of some guy which i put together and noticed that there were two different heads. there both 302 but the only diference i see is the bolts that the rockers bolt on to, on one they bottom out so that the bolt can only go down so far, and the other head the bolts are the same width the wholr way down. so my question is which one came with the block. is there a way to figure it out. i was told that one head is off of an early modle 302 and the other off of a later modle. and if so if i find a matching head can new modle heads fit older blocks and or older heads fit newer blocks.
sry its kinda confusing

yep it is confusing
rule #1 if it aint broke dont fix it
rule #2 if is is broke, dont use either. buy a new set or recondition a pair.
if you post pics, there are guys here who will be able to tell you which head iswhat and if its going to be easy or hard to match a pair.
good luck

On a related topic. I've got some '69 (I think) 302 heads off of a Torino (I think). The casting code is C9OE. Are they worth anything? I'm having trouble GIVING these things away.
Thanks

eep4life,
The only way to tell what heads you have is to find the casting number, see
http://www.aacncclub.com/FORD_HEAD_CASTING.html
then you can use this chart,
http://raceabilene.com/kelly/hotrod/engine3.html
to find out about the head. Note that in addition to the difference in rocker adjustment there are differences in the combustion chamber size that leads to differences in the compression ratio. There are also differences in the intake runner, the space between the intake manifold and the combustion chamber.
With all these differences, I would be in favor of changing your heads to a matched set. You have a lot of options from finding a used set in good condition and installing them, may be contact 65Raven?, to getting some killer high performance aluminum heads. Think about what direction you want to take and let us know.

raven those arent anything special, which is why your sitting on them - but eep needs a matched set, so there ya go =)
sounds to me like he has one head with a 3/8 stud and one with a 5/16 stud. is that correct? you could make that work, but you need to know that the chambers are the same size. the ports should be the same and the valves too...... casting numbers will tell all for sure.

ok so i ran the casting numbers and found out that the heads with 5/16 bolts are from an 71-74 302 and the other head is from a 68-70 302. the only difference is the chamber size. whats weird is i tried to run my block casting number and i cant find it. its not on anyones list. the casting number is D1ZM-6015-AA. so my next question is. if i find a matching head which i know i can will either set work with the block i have. by that i mean... if i go with the newer pair or the older pair will each pair work on the same block.
Congradulations!!! Those are the casting numbers for the highly prized Mexican block. All the 289/302 stuff works with this block. About 13 pages of posts comparing this block to the US block.

either of those heads are crap though, ditch em for a set of early 351w heads, or some GT40 heads. you can find sets of GT40's redone with larger valves and stiffer springs for like 600.00 a pair.
great find on the mexican block, how the hell did you end up with that?
