Default Air Conditioning on a 69

Alright, lately it's been getting pretty hot here during the days, and with the 69 I've got it seems to always be at least 10-15 degrees hotter inside the car than outside. Now, it's got factory air conditioning, but the problem is it hasn't run in probably 30 years. The car was my mother's first car in high school in the mid 70's and she never had the air conditioning working in it.

That's my delimma. About the only I thing I know from my mom right now is that way back when, she thinks it was the compressor that wasn't working. Now, I really have no idea how to go about fixing this so it blows cold air at me instead of hot engine compartment air [:@]

We don't really have the budget to replace all the parts and have a whole new system, which is why I'm coming here for advice. Since we don't know what works and what doesn't, and what doesn't leak and what does, we aren't quite sure what to do with it. Should I just take it to a local body shop and see if they can inspect it and figure out what we need (we don't have any places that specialize in older cars or in air conditioning specifically which I know will make this harder)?

Hoping there's a little knowledge on this here, I'd be very greatful.

You don't need to take it to an airconditioning place that specializes in classic mustangs. Any auto airconditioning place can give you an estimate of repair. Obviously the R-12 that is still left in that old system has to be recovered and the new 134A has to be added to the system, but a lot of that depends on the condition of the compressor and other related units. Take it to a pro.
