289 Engine Upgrade
Hey guys,
I am new to Mustang Forums and I am seeking sound advice. I am looking to upgrade my engine which has a 289 2bl out of a 65 coupe. I also have a 3-speed manual tranny. The local speed shops are "blowing a lot of smoke" my way. The obvious upgrades are the cam, carb, and intake manifold. I want to keep it street legal, but I want to increase my current performance. I welcome any advice/recommendations. Please specify carb/intake manifold combos. Thanks!

You can add some performance and horsepower by strapping on a Weiand dual plane intake manifold and just about any 4 barrel carb of your choice. At this point you don't want to exceep about 600 cfm. Throw some headers (hookers) on there with a cam and you will have help to get a little better air flow. But, basically you are just spitting in the wind if you don't change out the heads to either an aftermarket head like AFR 65, or to another cast iron head like the gt40. Throw a dual exhaust on it with an "X" pipe. If you opt to go with an aftermarket head, you can increase the CFM on the carb. Power costs money, and a lot of it.
Call the police in Houston and ask them what is not legal to drive on the streets of Houston. I don't know because I live in a small town that doesn't have any "street legal" laws. At least I don't think they do because I see some pretty bad assed hot rods coming through this little tourist town quite often.
