HELP! U JOINT???
So when i put my 67' into drive it runs fine for a half a block but when I get on it or deaccelerate I hear a loud squeeling in between my back 2 tires somewhere. Could that be a bad U-joint? A bad rear gear? It's the original drivetrain from the 67'. It only happens when I'm in drive and If I put it into neutral it stops but will continue when it goes back into drive.
your diff is shot a ujoint will make the driveshaft move around youll see scrap marks around the driveshaft and it would only do it when put in gear not after your moving.start saving youll probably need to replace the diff and the ring and pinon gears.
I am going to have to agree. Bad U-Joints only make noises when you first take off. Once they get to spinning they are under load. If it was the rear wheel seal, it would be squealing anytime the car was moving. Put the trannin in neutral. Jack the car up and put it on stands. Crawl under there and grab the drive shaft and turn it back and forth. How much play do you have? If it's a lot, then tear the rear down and replace the ring and pinion or have someone else do it.
I have had U joints squeel. Best wasy to eliminate them is to climb under and grab the drive line and the twist like soaring said and look for play. It sounds like a rear end to me though.
most of us like the squeeling noise when we accelerate...its the back tyres losing their grip on reality.
No, wait a minute, squeels when decelerating???
That would be one of those e-brake parking manuevers. Release the brake and it will go away.
(sorry, i didnt get enough sleep last night.)

go with climbing under and trying to turn/rock the D shaft,,if there's no play,,,, find some dough,,it's probably the diff ,, and then it's a here we go thing,, cause they gotta take evrything apart axels and all and it becomes an infamous while we're here thing which means do the axle bearings and such since everythings toen apart,,,,GOOD LUCK just got done with that deal
You are coasting-You have noise-You put it in neutral-The noise stops--What changed? Did the drive shaft stop turning? Did the rear axle Stop turning? - Did the wheels stop turning? or did the engine and the front part of the transmission stop turning?
PS--How about running it with the rear wheels off the ground--

DonA,
Nice bit of remote troubleshooting but - remember that while rolling in neutral, there is no engine torque going into the rear axle from the drive shaft. Still, your point has merits.
