Default Safety upgrades

I'm new at mustang rebuilding andI'm in the middle of tearing down my '67 Coupe. I'm going to restore it to original condition.I know there have been vast improvements in technology since then, so I'm looking for things to upgrade the car so that it is safer and performs better without detracting from the original look or sound. When I mean looks I'm just talking interior and exterior. I'm fine with things looking a little different in the engine compartment or in the undercarriage. It's just a 200 six so I plan on just using it for street driving, not as a daily commuter though.I'll save the big performance/racing upgrades for the next one.

The first thing is brakes. After the brakes are done, the front suspension should be rebuilt. New wheels with new tires would be a plus. Rebuild the seats including rebuilt belts are about all you can do on the interior.Anengine rebuild could be considered as reliability is part of a safe car.Almost everything else gets into modifications that you say you are not interested in doing.

+1 on brakes
The 3-point seatbelts is also a great idea.

I don't think it was till 68, but they came out with a collapsable steering column. Yours right now is a spear if you are in a wreck.

You've crossed the line into the dark relm of 'restomods'. Front disc upgrades are available for around $1000. They are bolt-in kits althought some may require'minor' additional items. Rear discs are not available for 6 cylinder cars. You need to 'upgrade' to a different (V8) rear axle.

Maybe I am doing a restomod. I guess I don't understand the difference.

Do the bolt-in kits work as well?

Taking a stock vehicle and installing nonstandardpartsto improve the safety, reliability and performance would be a basic definition of a modified restoration.....ie. restomod. Typical items are:
- Disc brakes
- Upgraded steering
- Improved suspension
- Fuel injection
- 5 Speed manual over drive or AOD
- 3 point seatbelts
- Upgraded wiring
- Highback bucket seats
- Modern gauges
- Brighter Headlights
- Larger wheels/tires
- Dual Master Cylinder
- Electronic ignition

along with everything listed i would recomend installing after market head rests like you can buy on most mustang restoration sites or high backed seats from a late 60's mustang cause they will definently make things alot safer along with a collapsable steering wheel
