Default Questions on a 68

Hi everyone and thank you for the site.

So here are my questions

1. How can I check if I have a 302 in my Mustang? I check the vin on the car and it states it is one. However, when my dad bought the car back in the early 80s, it was said that it was a 289 all the way through to a 302 Boss. However, I was doing some research and the 302 Boss 1st showed up in the 69 and the 70.

2. I am in the process of rewiring the car and wanted to know, whereshould I start at?

3. I also have a vision of changing the chrome trimming to Black. Is there anywhere I can find those or do I have to paint them?

I am sure, I am going to use the site more with some questions. Here arepics of the car.

There are casting numbers on the block above the starter that can be decoded to determine if it is a 289 or 302 block, but in 68 Ford ran out of 289 blocks so they actually put 289 internals in a 302block. This makes measuring the stroke or crankshaft or rods, about the only sure fire way to determine a 289 from a 302. You may have 289 heads, but these can be bolted onto a 302.

Why are you rewiring? Usually it is easier and much less expensive to fix specific problems.

Don't know of any "black" trim, you would need to paint. You didn't ask for an opinion, but mine is DO NOT DO THIS.

You sound very young and innocent when it comes to classic mustangs. You have a very nice looking mustang, but you need to understand the law of the land. There are two schools of thought here. One is to try to keep it as original as possible, and the other is to restomod it at will.
Now, your first lesson. Painting chrome is a real stupid idea. It will peel off in a matter of weeks and look like ****.

Glen, shame on you, using a vulgar word - (you figure out which one I ment).
To 'rewire' a car implies something that sends a shiver up my spine. It's don't do. The hill guy was one hundred percent correct and I'll another - why?

Thank you very much for the replies and I am grateful to them. Yes, I am very young in terms of Mustangs and car mechanics in general, but not that young in the real .

high: Thank you for the 302 question. I guess its fustrating for me not know what I have. See actually heard the opposite from what you are saying, so that just depresses me more . Would it happen to be recorded when they ran out? I can check out the VIN on it to see. The rewiring question is quite easy. I am scared that there is going to be a short one of these days that will cause alot of harm. More specifically, there is about 40 yrs of rigging involved in the wiring. There is alot of loose, open endedwires in there. Thank you on the trim...I was hoping to find some somewhere. I kinda knew not to paint the trim...more hassle then anything else.

Soaring: Thanks for the response. I knew painting chrome was a dumb idea. Don't know why I wrote it, maybe to show there is no other option perhaps.

66: Its just alot of open loose/ wiring tape all around.

I haven't seen any black trim in my travels. You can getyours black chromed or anodized black, you will have to find some one that does it in your area for pricing. As for the loose wiring, what I do is get some heat shrink and but them on the ends, just cut a small piece and put the wire in half way and apply heat...Nice and neat.

Restomod guys have all kinds of ways to eliminate the chrome, but painting it black is just a stupid idea because it will just peel off. Make up your mind to spend the money to eliminate the chrome, or live with it.

LCC: Thanks for the help. I will try to look around. I have a Mustang shop that is real close to me, so I will ask them.

Soaring: I understand what you are saying. I am not going to paint it, I just need help to find somewhere where I can have it changed.

Most of the wiring in a 68 is available in the aftermarket. I've bought most of it to replace the really bad stuff in mine (I got four) and have not been dissapointed in the quality. If you have a concern with the under dash harness, it is very expensive. On the other hand, I pulled one of mine, re-taped it and put it back. The other three don't require that drastic measure. Forty year old stuff is ok, unless someone tried to re-wire with a hack saw, wire nutsand masking tape - usually to install a stereo. Check out the mail stores. They may have what you need.
Pull the starter and look up on the block for the casting numbers. Let us know what you find. They should look like C5AE-6015E, C5OE-6015A or C6AE-6015A for a 289,or C8OE-6015A fro a 302. There is also a date code there, with a single number for the year, a letter for the month and one or two numbers for the day (examp - 7D11 = 1967, March 11).

If you really wanted to replace the chrome..you could take it all off....and take it to a powdercoaters, where they would sand blast it then coat it gloss black. It would stick.

Personally I think it would look like out of place...(nice way of saying look like poopie)

But hey...it's your car..do your own thing. Our opinion doesn't really matter now does it
