VIN on car
I recently sold my 66 mustang I had replaced the driver door. The owner went to DMV and cant find numbers that match the numbers on the title. Are there other numbers stamped into the car anywhere?
If there arent what can he do to get it registered?

There are typically four places for the VINs on a 66 Mustang, the door data plate, the visible one on the left hand fender apron under the hood and two 'hidden' ones. The first hiddenone islocated on the same fender apron about a foot backand just forward ofthe hood hinge under the edge of the fender. The other one is on the opposite side in the same place under the edge of the fender. Yes, you have to remove the fender to see it.

Yes and no. If you look at the Ford door data plate, it says'Vehicle warranty Number', 'Not For Title Or Registration Purposes'. The official VIN number is on the left fender apron. It is a permanent stamping into the sheet metal. If that fender apron is replaced, you lose the VIN number. I know, I have a 66 hardtop without that 'official' number. The two hidden ones are the back-up and should be used for registration or at least verification. That's what I did.
However, you can make a replacement door data plate but there is more than the VIN on it, and that's the problem. There is: body code, exterior paint code, interior trim code, scheduled build date code, DSO code, axle code and transmission code. Most of that can be figured out and the rest can be faked. That's your choices.

And where would one go to get a new plate made?
Thanks for the help
The fender apron is also called the inner fender. Open your hood and look on the driver's side. You will see the black apron where you have the windshield wiper water bag, etc attached. Now, look at the first picture and you will see a cut out section right above my white recovery tank. Look at the 2nd picture and you will see my VIN. That is the only legal place to get your VIN from when registering a car.

The fender apron is the engine compartment sheet metal that the fender attaches to. The VIN number is stamped on the flat surface (the black painted part) under the front fenders (painted blue). To see the 'secret' stampings, you need to remove the upper part of the fender, all six visible bolts, one accessed fromthe door frame at the top and a nut that is accessed by removal of the soor sill and the kick panel. All are 1/2 in hex.
To have a plate made is not easy. You have too much information missing. I will send you a private e-mail on this subject later. Got a birthday party to go to.
