See if your local auto parts store has a spring compressor that mounts inside the spring rather than on the outside. Youshould be able to compress the spring, then slip it upwards into the shock tower, then down onto the spring perch. You may need to jack the car up further and push down on the suspension (upper arm) to try and make a little more room.

ill lok for one of those but my concern is once i get the spring compressed with one of those tools how do i slip the shock in since all the tension is held by the shock being attatched to the top of the shock tower and the boot. if the tool is running in side the spring how do i get the shcok in there too.

Let's start form scratch.
Car?
Year?
And the shock goes on after the car is on the ground - ready to roll.

i have a 69 mustang coupe.... so the shocks go in when its on the ground...im having a hard time visualizing this... can you give me some what of a step by step... and if you put the shock in while the car is on the ground that means the weight of the car will keep the spring compressed? which means i need to have my motor in the car right?

I used the single screw type spring compressor. By placingone end of the spring compressor atopthe shock tower insidethe eng compartment, you can pull the spring up, and then simply lift the lower control arm and bolt it to the spindle. The hardest part is turning the spring before you start compression,so the end seats properly in the perch once it's all bolted together. The spring will naturally want to twist as it's compressed, so you have to anticipate theinch of twist.
