Default rear end question

OK, me and my dad were arguing, when i first got the car there was a leak in the axle, axle isnt cracked or anything but i remember the leak coming from the gasket, but he says he remembers the leak coming from the driveshaft input, what would cause a leak to be there at the driveshaft?

Old age. The fix is to have the differential rebuilt.

Got the tools? Get a rebuild. A great opportunity to get the wheel bearings replaced too.

Be careful... changing a pinion seal is not like changing a thermostat gasket. You'll need special tools and know what your doing.

Replacing a pinnion seal is really not a big deal, drop the shaft, remove the yoke, pry the old seal out and drive a new seal in.....

It's not a big deal, but it can suck if the yoke is stuborn...

The only special precaution that I know of when replacing a pinion seal is to get the torque correct on the pinion nut when you put it all pack together.
