Default Dipstick questions

The oil dipstick in my car (289, auto) is messed up. When I pull it out to check the oil, there is oil almost 6 inches up the stick. The"Safe" line isonly about 2 1/2 inches up.I just changed the oil a month ago, so I know there is only 5 qts in it. I thought maybe the previous owner put in the wrong dipstick, so I bought a new from mustangs plus, and it is the same length. Also, when you put the stick in the tube, it sounds like it is scraping the bottom of the pan. The pan is the correct pan also. Any ideas??

It is not a ford number but it is M-6750-A302. It is the same number used by alot of different companies for the same part. Surely they cant ALLbe wrong, I hope As far as the old one, I cant find number on it.

That's a Motorsport part number, I'll go back out to the garage and measure.

Damn,,,, just lost this post,,,, ok, I will type it again....

Fix it at your next oil change. Change you oil as you always do, but leave it one quart down. Start the motor for a moment, turn it off, let it sit a couple of minuites.

Check your dipstick, cut the stick about 2" to 2 1/2" below where the oil is on the stick.

Reinsert the stick, scratch in a new "low mark"at the oillevel on the stick.

Add the final quart of oil, give it a couple of minuites, reinsert the stick, scratch in a new "full" mark on the stick. You are done, and for free.

My dipstick is 20 1/4" long.

JMD, thanks for the tip, I guess that is what I will have to do once I get it back together. I am putting on a new intake manifold today and tomorrow, so my top half is in pieces.

Measurements taken from a untouched 65 289 engine.
Tube - from timing cover to top - 9 7/8
Dip stick - bottom to tube 'seat' - 19 5/16
Do the math - 9 7/16 difference.
There are many variations on 289 engines from 64 to 68.
