Default How old for a classic?

I keep hearing that a Mustang II is not a classic. How old does a car have to be to be considered a classic, and how old to be considered an antique? I am not trying to get the IIs out of their forum and into ours because they are different cars and I believe they need their own area. I just think we should give them some respect and call them a classic. Maybe we should do a poll. Is a Mustang II a classic?

There is an age limit for the US gov to consider it a classic. If you want classic plates. If I remember right I think that it must be 30 years old. I could be wrong with that tho. If might be 35

It's not a Federal regulation. Each individual state determines the "classic" car status. For Florida the car has to be 25 years old to be a classic and 50 years old to be an antique.

In my personal opinion I think 30 years is the "classic". Would you call a Ford Pinto a classic though?

For the purposes of this board, the Mustang I is the "classic" generation of the lineage, so I don't see that it is an age related segregation.

The PC way would be to call this forum "Mustang I" or "First Generation". I like "Classic" however since almost anyone that comments on my car so far says "cool car, what a classic" or some variation but always includes "classic".

Not to mentionthe Mustang IIs are not as well thought of for the most part. That could be a reason for it to not be thought of as a classic.

Some people like Pintos, should they be denied classic status just because others don't like them? I don't like four doors or wagons but how many of those are classics. Maybe we should call them retro classics. They are still old cars and a part of automotive history.

I like classic rock, but classic country? Some people like it.

I don't know the reason, but the "accepted" term for a classic is 1965-73 Mustangs, and then the II's, then the Foxes, etc. etc.
It's just an accepted thing.

Seems the Feds most likely will leave this up to each individual state, as to set the guidelines for a "Classic" or "Antique" status. I think Virginia is a 15 year or older in order th obtain the status plates. Also, I think when you say "Classic", most people will be reminded of a "Muscle or Pony Car" era vehicle. Seems like in the early 70's when the Arab's and our own EPA put their influence on the "American Auto" manufactures. We got wammied two fold, by our own people (EPA), and the "Camel Jocks".Was thisthe birth of the Riceburners? This would make for an interesting poll.

I always thought the car had to be 20 years old to be considered a classic. I've noticed alot of four eye mustang owners calling theirs classics now.

I believe it has to be at least 30 years old to be considered a classic here in Oregon.
