Default 69-70 Air Conditioner Question

The PO has replaced the orginal A/C with a new 134 system. My fan controls are a little sensitve from age. My question is how many speeds should I have? Right now I have off, low, and high. I thought it had a third speed when I bought the car, but I cannot get it to work now. I could just be crazy. Can anyone tell me how many speeds I should have? How many did it have orginally? Anyone know a good place to send the controls to have them reworked and fixed if that is the problem?

Off-low-med-high.

If you're missing one, it could be either the selector or the little resistor.

Damn I was afraid of that. Guess I will try to take it apart and look to see what is going on.

Hey John the Cowboy,
The switch in question, also used in the heater circuit,is a special one for A/C. It is used on full size 69 and 70 Fords, Fairlanes and Falcons and 69 to 71 Mustangs. It may be still available from Ford. Try C9AZ-19986-A, Motorcraft YH-70 or look for a donor car. The standard heater one will not work.

More then likely the contact point in the switch lever is dirty. Try cleaning the switch assembly.

I looked at it last night (did not take it completely apart). It looks like I only have three positions eventhough the selector lever will go higher than position three. The three positions are off, low, and high starting from the bottom. Guess I will have have to take it all apart to see what is going on. I know the compressor, evaporator, and condensor were replaced when the new unit was installed. I have no idea what was done to the control unit. It looks orginal, but when I get it out I will see if they have modified it.

Thanks Jim for the part number. I will check with the ford dealer and parts house today for availability.

Radio Shack used to carry contact cleaner. Or try Google, e-bay or Amazon. It's probably classified as hazardous so be prepared to get the run around.
