manual steering conversion
hello, i have a 66 coupe with power steering and im looking to convert to manual steering. my question is what exactly is involved with this conversion? do i need to replace everything between the tie rods, or do i just need a manual gear and remove the power valve? thanks for your help.
Why do you want to do this? The PO took the PS off my car and was manual when I bought it. I bought the car with the PS parts, and that was the first thing I put back on.
If you really want to change over, you take off the PS pump, PS ram and linkage, and PS valve. You then need to put on a manual linkage. I ended up with one linkage part when I finished converting back from manual to power. I do not have my diagrams infront of me, but I think it is the center drag link that you need for a manual steering car. I think everything else is the same.

I could be wrong, but I thought the pitman arm connected to the PS control valve which connects to the PS drag link. I thought you needed a manual steering center link to connect to the pitman arm. Correct me if I am wrong. I will take a look at my diagrams tonight to verify.
I converted mine from power to manual. Pull all the PS assembly out and either install a new manual centerlink or buy a "convertor piece", which is just a piece of steel to fill in the spot for the valve and connects the pitman arm...

Stick to your 69, on the real classic Mustangs, the control valve is part of the center link, aka, drag link. The power steering type costs about a hundred bucks more.
