better cooling fan
i have the stock 5 blade cooling that came on my 70 mustang, with the shroud. id like to find a 7 or 8 blade stock fan, think it might help on cooling at idle in this az hot weather. i found sites that mentioned a fan clutch setup for the older mustangs, i see that i have a spacer between the fan and water pump. on my old 75 chevy truck, with a 454, when i bought a new fan clutch i went to the wrecking yard and found a 8 bladed fan, what a difference, cooled great at idle. anyone done a clutch fan replacement on the older mustang, or found a better bladed fan for it.
never done it on a stang but clutch fan is a good idea. I changed an old Holden (GM) V8 that way and it worked well.
Not ideal for high revving engines apparently...that wasnt a problem for my application but something to bear in mind.

Number of blades doesn't necessary mean more air flow. The design of those blades is much more important. That said, make sure your fan sits in the proper relation to the shroud. Should be at the exit of the shroud with the blades close to the lip of the shroud. The shroud should also be tight against the radiator so all the air has to come through the radiator. If your car can keep cool at moderate speeds, there's no reason it can't stay cool at idle with the stock fan.
well today my car ran 170-180 with 110 temps and ac blowing cold i replaced the vacuum advance yesterday, it was leaking, and hooked it directly to manifold, a mech friend had told me to do that on my old ****** jeep, it has a 350 sbc and would idle a little hot and ping off idle. i guess with the advance not working and a vacuum leak was just enough to make it run hot. anyway im happy now.
if you're pinging you're might be advanced too far for your octane gas, thats what i would think at least. you're at a pretty much perfect operating temp for your car so that, as far as i know, wouldnt be the cause of any pinging
"Hotrod 351", was the the timing the problem? I think I ask that in another post. Some basics on shroud/fan combos. The shroud needs to fit the radiator properly with as little leakage as possiable. The fan tip to shroud radius is best at 1/4 of an inch (I knowthats close but its the most efficient). More than this tends to loose efficiency very quickly. Fan clutch will save power when its not in use, but still will rob power when its engauged. I have came to like electric fans over the direct drive, unless its a "Concours" and needs to be stock.
