Default 66 Radio recomendations

Hi all, this is my first post.
I have a 66 Coupe that is in need of a better soundsystem. The dash is not cut and I won't cut it. I also don't want to put a head unit in the glovebox, so I know my choices are getting much smaller. I would like to have a cassette player head unit that also controls a disc changer, mounted in the trunk probably.
I was looking at the Custom Audiosound USA-5. Anybody got any experience with them and how good (or bad) are they? They have 240 W (4 x 60W) and I think that would be enough for me (for now anyway) as long as it's not distorted when you crank it up.
Anything else you would recommend.
The casette portion is not a requirement, it would just be nice since I still have so many old cassettes. The CDchanger capabilityis a necessity though.
Thanks in advance and I look forward to hanging around here.

There are a few stereo radio systems that have a CD changer that can be located in the trunk. I considered this type of system for my 66 part-time daily driver hardtop but decided to spend the money on my Fastbacks, both having beautiful AM radio. Whatever radio you choose, it's the speaker placement that make the difference. Front kick panel R and L and rear package tray R and L types seem to be the best. Six way types have 'two ways' without a location.

I have tried a stereo system in my 65 more than once. I had speakers in the package tray and in the kick panels and in the door, etc, etc. Bottom line is that these old cars were not designed to have a quality stereo system as we know it today. My 03 Mach sounds great right from the factory with the 7 speaker Mach system, but I have digressed with the 65 to just the simple AM radio with the speaker in the top of the dash. I get Rush Limbaugh just fine.

I bought a Custom Audiosound unit and am highly disappointed in it. Look for the Kenwoods or others that will fit your dash.

Been there, done that Jimbo. They all suck. Again, these old cars were not designed to have a quality stereo system.

I agree with you about not butchering the dash but ya gotta have tunes so, I built a small console that fits right under the dash. See attached:

Between my brother and I, we've had three different Custom Audiosound units and they all B-L-E-W! I'm convinced that underneath the custom fit is a $15 Wal-Mart radio. All three of ours got real staticy(?) and distorted when the volume was raised above a whisper. I've looked at the Kenwoods, but they don't seem to look as 'classic' as I'd like. I saw mention someplace else about Ken Harrison radios or something like that but couldn't find any info.

Ultimately,I really like how the stock AM radio looks so I guess it will be ball games, news and talk radio for me. I do have a satellite boombox and an Ipod with a boombox which may ride shotgun with me if I really need the tunes.

Would it kill Custom Audiosound to put a little more R&D into the performance of the radio? [sm=dontgetit.gif]
