Default 302 fine tuning failures

What i have: 73 mustang
No a/cor power brakes.Only have powersteering.
Soon to have dual exhaust
302 rebuilt w/ 289 heads completly ported
mild "Comp" cam
Edelbrock: AirGap intake& 650 cfm w/ sec. vacuum
Msd blaster2 coil.
C4 trans. rebuilt with a shiftkit and a 2400 stall conv.

I have removed all smog application and everything else is stock. Im not sure how much the stock Dist. and points have to do with my troubles but i have the timing and dwell perfectly at stock and there is still hesitation (probably carb). S/P gaps are stock. I have vacuum advance and vacuum from my trans. Both hooked up to a 'T' then to my carb.
My transmission used to have a dual port vacuum switch on it but the guy who rebuilt it said i would only need a single one going to carb/vacuum if i was taking my smog out. --?-- not sure if he was right.
I want to get an MSD dist. with hei to finally be rid of points.
Am i on the right path with all this? I'm not sure how much the tuning specs need to change (if any) and/or what i need to setup my carb with (jets, springs, etc) because my carb is stock also.

|I am also interested in mod'ing this stang to have a shaker hood assembly

Not sure on the rest of your questions but you can save a bunch by going with "petronix"(...I think I spelled it right) ditributor upgrade. It bolts up to your existing distributor. It's about 1/2 the cost of the whole distributor, and you just take out your points and cond, pull the 2 wires through, and screw this thing to the same holes...gap it and you're done. There is a part that fits under the rotor and that's all the parts the kit comes with. You should re-gap the plugs to .042 also.

What exactly does the car do when it hesitates? And what cam do you have and how much head work? The RPM Air Gap and a 650 are pretty big induction for a street302 unless it has large heads and a large cam(and I mean large)

Your stock system needs nothing more than a Pertonix electronic system. Google it.

The Edelbrock carb may be limiting your adjustment possibilities, but try to richen the accelerator pump (I believe there are 3 holes to choose from...but it's beenwhile since I've worked on an Edel carb).

I don't know what you mean by 'mild' cam, though. A .500" lift cam would take full advantage of the air gap and carb, and that's mild in my book.

Also, make sure your distributor is connected to a timed vacuum port and not to constant vacuum. There is a port on the front of the Edel carb just for the dizzy.

i have heard of pertronix but dont mind spending the extra $ for the msd. Unless it could do damage then of course i wouldnt want to.
The hesitation is at low rpm'sAND when i go more than half-throttle.
Im almost positive the vacuum advance is off and my timing is at 6 btdc.
I just realized the vacuum line from my trans. was corroded and cracked. Big leak.
|As for my 650 carb and intake... if it was too much couldnt i bring the carb down?

I cant remember the lift's exactly on my cam but i know they were mild. More than stock lift ratio but not by much. And the heads were 168 out and 192 in ... might be off by a few but the valves were ported as far as they could be safely
