Default 390 or 351? Which would you pick?

Which of the two engines would you pick and why ?

I was thinking about a 351w .. but something is luring me to the 390 .

351, no contest!!!!!

First, the 351 is lighter

Second, if it is cubes you want a 351 can be stroked out to a 427

Third, FE motors are harder and more expensive to find performance for.

Forth, Along the same lines as the last point, the 351 is in the same basic family as the 302, 289, 260 & 221 so the choice of performance parts is huge

Fifth, Due to size the 351 is easier than a 390 to fit in a Mustang especially if you want to use headers

Sixth, There are more transmission options with a 351

DazeCars pretty much covered it. Lots of power can be made from a 351w with some new heads/head work, and all the other goodies. And as he said you can stroke it for more cubes and more power.

But if it's not power you are looking for, I'd still go with the 351w, mainly because of parts for it, just in case.

im a displacement nut the 390 block can be bored and stroked to a 449 whats your budget like a small block is cheaper to build up then a big block. fe fits anything 67-70 easy but its a tight fit.

haha wow ...

well i still have to worry about other parts of the car too ..

i need to get the car media blasted .. then paintjob .. then get the interior put in ..

then work on my suspension . and lastly pop in the engine .

im hopping a 351 bored/stroked to a 408 .

well at least thats the plan ..
so it will be a while . but it should be done by the end of my next school year..

I think a engine bay full of FE is the way to go. It is a little more expensive and a little more trouble to find parts for but it is worth it. Anybody can do a stroker motor. It takes something different to do a FE. 390 would be great. I have 428 myself. I wedged it in my 67 and love it. I get about 500 horses out of it. That is enough for me right now.

but some problems are the weight difference .. as well as gas efficiency ..

a 351 or 408 will eat up gas as it is ..

also i dont want to have to deal with wedging the engine in ..

and im planning on saving the 390 plans to combine it with my fastback plans in a few years
