Default down to the nitty gritty...

I just got off the phone with my mechanic, all I need is the money now and the 351 is in the shop.. Anyway, I need some help on figuring out what I should do with my budget build. I just dont really know enough yet to make all the decisions myself..

-Get better internals or go back to pretty much stock everything? Which ones to get if I do?

-New cam (most likely the Edlebrock performer) but I want to try and save gas, it is a daily driver.

-Port/Polish Headsor spend the money on internals, or better headersand port/polish 10+ years later. How much of a difference would it make?

I have to say, you guys (and girls) have taught me a whole lot about my mustang over the last few months and I appreciate all the help. Thanks

-Justin

I have a 69 like yours and it has a 302 2bbl. It will burn the tires off and go 120 mph. I think whatever you do to it you will enjoy. I would reuse as much as possible from the old engine. The heads may need to be upraded for unleaded fuel. Put new valve springs in it because the old ones will float the valves at high rpm. Ask your mechanic what he thinks about cam choice.

You will know more about what you need after the engine is apart.

I can smell the tires burning already, good luck with the build and keep us posted.

Do you want a mileage daily driver, or a performance daily driver? If you want performance in a daily driver you're gonna need good heads

Go back stock, with the exception on the performer cam, you will be happy with with the results, you will have more $$ in you pockets, and you can always upgrade later when you have more fundage.... Get yourself a good (good stock, consider new rods) bottom end, the rest is easily upgradable...

Consider this, with your new cam, the car will run better than it did off the showroom floor, and it ran well enough then that Ford sold tens of thousands of them.

I forgot,, My budget is about $1500 for the engine and then I have to put exhaust on it but I already have mufflers, I just need to buy the headers and pay $330 for the exhaust to get welded up with 2.5 inch pipes and an H pipe. The quote for the long block build is right at $1,100 stock, and it just goes up from there. Thats a budget build.. They will put it on a running stand, spin it to check compression and then drop it off at my house with a 12000 mile warantee thats starts the day that I crank it over. How much difference in quality are we talking if I go with cheaper pistons, I see they go from about $9-$50 a piece.. is a lighter piston better? It ramps up quicker right?

and to answer the question earlier,, I want a performance daily driver with good mileage.[sm=gears.gif]

If your budget is only 1500 then you are going to have to go with a stock build. Just tell the mechanic you want a complete overhaul for no more than 1500 and he will be able to advise you on just how much he can do for that.

go with a bigger cam, it may give you worse gas mileage, but think about, those are very fast miles

no but really, it didnt get that great gas mileage with stock parts
