Default 302 in a 65 coupe question

After work tonight I am going to look at a 90's Lincoln with a 5.0 in it to replace my 289. Anything I need to look for besides the obvious? It is still in the car, so I'm gonna have him start it for me and listen and look. What parts do I need out of this car to stick it in my 65? I will be using my intake and carb (4 bbl) and I have a C4 (built) now, I know I need the harmonic balancer (right?) anything else to make this switch happen? Any other parts that I will wish I had? Since I will be pulling it myself, I can probably get other stuff for next to nothin', what should I grab? I appreciate the info!

Oh, and I assume a 5.0 out of a Lincoln (unknown year other that 90's and unknown make) will be just fine, correct?

Thanks again all!

Itll fit...when u order the harmonic make sure its for the late model 302 conversion and get a flexplate that is for the conversion also.If u dont it will NOT work.And dont worry about almost any of the electrical cuz ur not running fuel injection and thats what most of those wires are

I think the oil pan might need to be changed also, if this is the case you will need to relocate the dipstick and oil pump pickup.

Oh, and I am almost positive that the Lincoln will havea serpintine belt setup, if this is the case, and youuse your stock pulleys,I think you mightneed a new water pump too...
late = reverse rotation?
early = standard rotation?

I don't remember where I read that at some point in time, the 302's of the 80's and maybe even the early 90's were dogs for power. Low compression, smog equipment, etc. You might want to research that before you leap.

If it's a good deal..get it all...brackets, wiring, fuel system...etc.

you can sell what you don't use later

Well, maybe and maybe not. After trying to find that article I mentioned, I at least found this. 1990 was the year Lincoln had both the 5.0 and the 4.6. Like I had remembered, the 302 (5.0) only had 150 horsepower. Hell, my light tailed Ol' Yeller has more than that. I would look for an earlier model of 5.0 unless you want to tear that engine down and wind up with a block that you have to put new heads, etc, on.

SOARING RULES ALL!!!

You saved me $350 and I am forever in your debt! Turns out the car is a 1990, and so I guess it has the 150hp engine...NOT what I want! Thanks so much for the info. As far as I "knew", all 302's were created equal. I think a lot of us "knew" that, in fact. I had to fight really hard with the wife to get the cash, and I know the huge fight we would'a had if I said I needed another one because the one I just bought was wrong (those of you that are married can completely imagine I'm sure!)

I guess I am on the lookout again. Anyone know of a Mustang 302 (up to 125,000 miles on it, stock or modified, runs and makes no noises it shouldn't and doesn't smoke) for sale? I just need something I can install or put a cam in and use until the lottery decides it wants to pick my numbers. If anyone knows of such a beast I would be very thankfull for the info!

Thanks again,

Roy

Why not just rip apart the 289 and have it bored out to 302 if you really want a 302? Just a thought maybe?

You are obviously forgetting the change from net to gross HP rating in 1975. 150HP Net SAE rated is roughly equivilant to 210-220 HP Gross SAE rated. A 1990 ford 302 from a Lincoln would put out a fine amount of power for a classic mustang. It would also be a full roller block meaning you could easily upgrade to a bigger cam that would be more streetable that the same rough power lever producing cam in standard flat tappets. The anemic 302s are from the late seventies. The power level for that specific 302 from the Lincoln would also be higher with the addition of a dual exhaust setup.

im not sure which pan the towncar uses bet double check probably need a new oil pan.since it sounds like your ditching the efi why not rebuild your 289 stroke it or get a 351w there easy to get.
