To start doing my own work on my Stang,

Where Do I start?

Should I make a masterplan like literally have the work written down and whatnot .

Plus , Is it better to make decision abouts ratios and all that on yourself .

Or rather have a mechanic do it for you ?

learn as much as you can. get some books, ask questions, go to diferent mechanics and parts stores. before attempting to do anything to your car, if your not too familiar with it, research it first and always make a note of how it was before you took it apart so you can you be sure you put it back together properly. the good things about classics is that for the most part they are pretty easy to work on at home. they arnt made out of computers like the newer cars. ive had my car for 5 years now and when i first got it i didnt know where to add oil (really, i was 15 and its my first car). but after having it for a while you start to learn more and more about it. about a month ago me and my cousin did an engine swap on it, it was pretty simple, just time consuming. they are fun cars man and even more fun when you can see the fruits of your labor. good luck man, and remember that knowledge is power

Yeah, do a thorough inspection to determine just what needs to be repaired or upgraded to a newer technology according to your overall dream for how it will look and drive when you are basically through with the restoration. Write down the necessary repairs first. Some attack the body first, and others pull the engine, tranny and rear and work on those first. Then attack the body and interior next. Depending on which way you want to go such as keeping it original or making a restomod out of it will depend on that final dream. Get a strategy going, and write it down. Make a list of what all the parts will cost to achieve your final goal. In a lot of cases, just writing down the cost of the parts changed their view of what the final outcome would be. Research, research and research some more before you even turn the first bolt.

Exactly what Soaring said. Make a list of parts your going to need to achieve your end result then get prices from the different shops and parts stores. Next, double the total to give you a more accurate figure[:@], then start cutting up your build from most to least important.

Oh Yeah, I forgot to mention to double the cost of the parts. Welcome to our world newbie. Come here often to chat about your Mustang and the projects you are working on. One thing you must do though, is to show us pictures of your project as you do work on it. That's rule # 1.

Its going to be a restomod.

So should i piece it out ?

Ok so .

1.Engine, Tranny, Rear.
2.Body , Interior.
3.Final Touch Ups.

Also, So I want a Manual Tranny , What is the best recommended Performance Tranny for being cost effective. OD?? 5 Speed?, 4 Speed?
As well as engine , Am i best off buying a crate performance engine or Rebuilding one for performance.
How about the rear , 9" It is , But what am i best off doing to it bulking it up wise? Any performance upgrades to that?
Im going to get 4 disk brakes all around with booster too .
etc etc...
For body work replacements , what general materical can i use to replace lets say any piece i want to ?
I want to remove the cowl vents by the window. On the coupe.
What kind of suspension things should i be worried about ? Im sure i will cover the basics .. but what out of the usual should i be considering too ?

And I know your wondering Budget right ?

Well all this will be over time , So money shouldnt be the greatest of issues.
Just know im a highschooler. And im usually broke .
But il manage around that , I want to have this baby done and running strong in about 1 year tops.

Ain't gonna happen in one year little bruthu. Not unless your papa has a wadof money to throw at it. Your hamburger flipping job ain't gonna get her done. With your dreams, you are talkingabout somewhere in the 20 thousand dollar range. And, that's with you doing all the work. Do you know how to weld? How much wrenching have you actually done?

You forgot to double the year...Your going to take a couple if your going to do it properly. My experience is with auto so I'll let someone else answer to T5 question, as for the rear end, your going to have to replace the drive shaft when upgrading the trans, so if you can, go with chrome molly. For the rear end, again, if your replacing the internals then upgrade to 31 spline axles and carrier, then you'll never have to touch that rear again..
The list just goes on and on.....

Well In about a year I should have put a good dent into the resto .

Im guessing it shouldnt take more than 2 tops.

I live at home so i dont worry about rent.

Im sure its going to be a wad of money But i think i should be able to throw all my money at it for about a whole 2 years before i move out .

umm btw ... some help with some of my questions would be appreciated .. I have no clue what to look for when it comes to trannies and all that , that i asked about.

I have a mechanic who will let me use his shop , new buddy of mine . Just helping him out with finding mustangs and whatnot .

So yeah..
