Like I said before, I don't know about the Falcons, but your are wrong about the 66-67 years only about the Hipo Jim. You know damn good and well that Carroll used the K code in his 1965 GT350. As far as the Falcon getting a K code, yeah there are mentions on the net of guys with K codes in their '65 Falcons, and especially in their delivery wagons.
Correct my year entry on the years for Mustangs with HP engines - yes, they were optional from early June of 1964 thru the 1967 production year. The first one however, was in H. Ford II's 1964 coupe, VIN 5F07K100148, schedulded to be built onMarch 5, 1964. but may in fact been built on the 9th.
Jim
Thank you for the correction Jim. Yeah, Ford II had the engine built to serve his purposes and to see if it would fly with the general public, but was not availale for the general public until June of '64.

Whewww, it looks like I am going to have to be on my P's and Q's, I appreciate all of the interest. I was just curious, the old guy we bought it from could have been on crack, who knows? I will get to the bottom of this caper and let everyone know. Any shop manuals better than another to begin my resto?

I have one of those HiPo 'clones' in my '67... probably better than stock, and it also has an upgraded intake manifold, similar to those available from Shelby in that year ... it has all/most ofthe internals except the larger main caps (but has ARP bolts instead) and I'm in the process of changing as many parts to "HiPo" specs & decals as possible (wires, etc)

I respectfully disagree with the idea that a 289 HiPo is worthless unless it's factory-original -- if done well, I think it matters to a buyer when choosing between two cars...

My car:

The engine is a 289 4bbl block that has been bored 30 over. The crank was turned 10 under. The block was boiled out shot-peened and decked. New cam bearings were installed. The mains were line bored. The rotating system was balanced and blueprinted -- new HiPo heavy duty rods with ARP bolts were installed. New flat top pistons with new rings were installed. All ARP bolts were used in the engine assembly. The Hi-PO heads were decked and new hardened seats and guides were installed. The heads were ported at exhaust and intake. New 351 three angle valves were installed. New dual valve springs, push rods and rocker arms were installed. A new Crane 306HP mechanical lifter cam was installed. New two row roller timing chain was installed. The intake is a Ford HiPo aluminum high rise dual plane unit. The Carb is a new Holley 650 Street Avenger. The ignition is a rebuilt Ford unit with Petronick innards, coil, and 8000 RPM rev limiter. The exhaust consists of new Stainless Works 3" tri-Y headers, 2.5" dual exhaust flowing through Magna flow mufflers and 2.5" chrome tips. The cooling system includes a new 4 row radiator, aluminum Flow Cooler high output water pump, new hoses with in line filter and belts. 5 blade clutched fan and billet aluminum under drive pulleys. The heater was rebuilt with new heater core, plentum, gaskets and hoses. The flywheel is a McCloud aluminum racing unit with dual friction clutch and wafer style pressure plate. The throuout bearing is new. The bell housing is a McCloud scattershield. The tranny is a heavy-duty Tremac 5 speed with jenny shifter. The driveline is a new custom made aluminum unit. The rear end is a completely rebuilt Ford 9" 31 spline limited slip unit with 3.50 ratio.

theres nothing really great about a hipo 289 except that it is a hipo, in a matching numbers car thats a different story......the cranks were hand selected stockers, the heads were the same as stock 4v but with screw in studs and the cam was a solid lifter, the intake was the same as a 4v 289, it had a dual point distributor, if it were rated in todays SAE ratings a run of the mill 5.0HO would be about the same or a couple horses more than a hipo 289 and with its supierior low end it would (everything else being equal) beat the hipo 289 but the hipo 289 sounds alot meaner. I had a friend in high school and he indeed had a 64 or 65 falcon sprint that came with a 289 hipo and the fender badges said "289 hi-performance" as well.

You are absolutely correct. No stock HP can keep up with a 5.0 - except in the money department. In 1966, they sold new for about $3500. Today, in top condition, a 289 HP convertible or Fastback will go for $60,000 - plus.
Stock is good - real good.

A stock 5.0? Heck, there are some modern V6s that put out 270+ HP ... why don't we consider those too while we're at it ... putting a stock 5.0 in a '67 Mustang ... mixing a 40 y/o car with a modern engine proves only about as much as putting a 40 y/o engine in a 2007 Mustang would prove ...

When I put something together I like using new, updated, better engineered parts. If it was that good 40yrs ago then it would still be produced today...As for the 5.0 302, Ford has said that they will bereproducing it again. Haven't heard anything about the 289??
