Here's the shifter linkage on my 69:

I'm not sure what this is supposed to look like, but I'm pretty sure this ain't it. Any guesses why it's this way?

You never know what you'll find on these old cars.

Some farmer must have owned it sometime in the past. How was the extension used?

looks like some one modified it so that the shifts match up with the indicator on the shifter. If the trans was not the original and the shift throw was different than such a mod would be necessary. The longer the shift arm the longer the throw and the les distance traveled on the shift indicator and the opposite applies as well the shorter the shift arm the shorter the throw and thus the longer travel on the indicator.

It was connected to the top linkage rod in this picture:

ORIGINAL: DazeCars

That's what I'm thinking, but it seems strange that this modification was necessary. Were there different shifters in this car for the different automatics?

As far as I can tell, that trans is an FMX, which is what the car is supposed to have according to the door plate. But it's definitely not the original transmission. The PO mentioned that he had installed it to replace a C4 that was causing some severe vibrations.

In the Ford Car Parts manual, there is one lower arm listed for all 69-70 shifters.
My recomendation - destroy - destroy - destroy.
