65-67 fastback availability
I have started looking for a 65-67 fastback project car that is in somewhat decent shape. So far I have found either a fastback thats already fix upand cost something over 20 thousand, or a ball of twisted steel that somewhat resembles a fastback. I'd like something that doesn't require intensive work like replacing the frame or having to fix pancake size rust holes. I guess my question is, how often does a good project car come around? Would I just be better off getting a coupe instead of waiting to find a fastback?

Welcome to the forums!!
You're going to want to fork over the 20K for a decent fastback. You'll end up paying that much anyways, if you go the other route. I say get a coupe if you are not THAT in love w/ the fastback.

I made that same decision, get a hardtop and wait for a good buy on a Fastback. It took ten years and buying two other 65 and 66 Fastbacks before I got my 'K' code. In that ten year period, I found out how to do a lot of repairs on my own, front end, power steering, seat covers, etc. I did that because when I went into a local Mustang store/shop and asked the owner/head mechanic forthe bolt that holds the clutch return spring bracket to the brake support on a 66 Mustang, he had no idea what I was talking about. It took time but now I know more about Mustangs than he does. The wait was worth it.
