engine wont start
I have a 66 Mustang with a 302-2V engine. I just bought a brand new Starter, starter solenoid, and starter switch and when i go to turn on the car, you can hear the starter working but it does not turn the engine over and it won't start the car. Also, sometimes when i turn off the car, the starter stays running and will only turn off after i disconnect the battery. Any body got any suggestions on how to fix this?
Hey,
I posted a similar problem. Was at the store and my '65 Coupe wouldn't start. The solenoid was making a wonderful grinding noise, but no juice was getting to the starter. Since then, I've replaced the solenoid, but same issue. Now, the battery is dead.
Check out my post, "What Friggin' Next?...The Starter." Lots of good ideas in there from the Forum.
Good luck.

If your starter continues to run after the engine is running and the ignition key has been taken off the start position, my first suspicion is that the bendix spring in your starter is not disengaging as it should . Take the starter out and have it checked at a parts store.
It is a brand new starter i bought only three days ago. I have read the other post about this, but my problem seems all electrical, i think. The battery is fine, the alternator is fine, it seems the starter bendix is not engaging the flywheel to turn the engine over. However, i inspected both the bendix and flywheel teeth and they seem fine. My uncle sez he has seen flywheels with worse teeth that work.
If the voltage is low the amp draw will go high enough to weld the solenoid contacts. Then the starter keeps running also. I had a bad cable causing a low voltage to the starter. Do a volt drop test.
Place the positive end of your meter on the battery and the negative on the starter terminal. When you crank the engine whatever you read on the meter is what you are losing. It should read close to zero. If you get a high reading keep trying the leads on different legs of the circuit until you isolatethe problem section.

I had the same problem with my '84 F-150. It has a 351W HO and it takes a different starter. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, every parts store said it took the same starter. I finaly took it to my mechanic and he figured it out. He put the right starter on along with a new flex plate. No problems since.
Thanks guys, i ended up takin her to the mechanic. He told me it was the starter and starter solenoid. both of which are brand new. i guess no more cheap parts from autozone, haha. I think i'll probably have to get a new starter switch too, because i think i fried the old one when i tried running the car. sad day...I didnt even think to tell the place i got the starter from that i dont have an original engine in my car. Guess thats my young age stupidity.
