Default A/C&Heater Controls

I will probably get ribbed for this, but here goes:

My A/C & Heater controls have never worked, so I'm not sure how to check them when I get the new stuff in. There are 3 levers going up and down, and a little one on the top which goes left to right. What does what, and how do I control it?

Also, as a side note. I dropped the little evaporator core box, with fans and all that stuff, and the hoses are connected in the back. That's normal. But they are covered in this black "tar" kind of stuff. any idea what it is, or how to get it off?

I bought a new Sanden compressor, so it's going in. I got new lines, so I figure it is better to replace. Thanks!

Ribbed - yup. I bet you never heard of the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section of this forum. There's a wiring diagram or two and other technical stuff you keep you reading for all of ten minutes on A/C.

Ah, but I am a frequent visitor of the FAQ. There are lots of wiring diagrams which I already have, but nothing about the physical (mechanical) switches. And there's nothing about the original A/C, just the aftermarket stuff.

factory air???

the controls you refer to are just the heater controls.
left one opens the heater tap to allow water from the block to circulate to the heater core
middle one opens a flap on the heater box to allow hot air into the cab
right one directs to floor or screen
the left to right switch above is for off low and high fan speed
is that what you meant?

Ha! See, I didn't even know that. I guess it makes sense, didn't know why I thought it was A/C.

So do those things happen when the "lever" is pushed up or down?

pushing down (away from the driver)activates heater and flap and pushing down also puts air to the screen
fan is left to right off to high

if the car had factory air is a big box with vents in it under the radio and the controls to the air are on it too.
