Default shifter heat

hey guys, so tonight me and my buddies were headin down the tollroad to highland park (lots and lots of hot girls!!) so we are cruizin along me in my 65 alone, and my friend in his g35 with a passanger. i down shift my car to low and the kid in the g35 downshifts as well (auto manual "triptronic") i punch it and he punches it and i stay about a fender ahead of him till we both let off. anyway, we get to this place and park. the temp gauge in my stang is readin about 3/4ths over. id ran her pretty hard, so i can understand. we go see a movie, 2 hours later we come back out and i start up the stang. the gauge is reading low, good news. but when i put my hand on the shifter its warm, on the verge of being hot...whats the deal. the car is a c4 automatic. fluids are all checked recently and filled as needed. is this normal? its never done this before. thanks.
