New to the Forum
Hi there,
I’m new to the forum as well as a new Mustang owner. Several months ago, I bought a 68 coupe with a
straight six. I’ve been reading posts over the past couple of weeks and have pick up a good about of info-
so thanks for that.
Things I have done so far: the rear quarter panels were shot- so I got new ones welded in. I upgraded my ignition
with Pertronix set up and put a new coil in- huge difference. I also put a new exhaust system in.
Original I had planned on dropping in a V8- but the six I have in there now was recently rebuilt and runs great-
so at this point I can’t justify pulling it out.
The person I had bought it from was planning on dropping in a V8 and had upgraded the rear axle. So as of
now, I have a 5 lug set up in the rear and a 4 lug set up in the front. I’d like to put some nice rims and tires,
but need to get the front upgraded to five lugs. What are my options here? I don’t know all that much about
axles. I’ve seen 4 to 5 bolt on conversion kits, but that would mean I’d have to get 2 rims with different
back-spacing- correct?
Any info or suggestions would be great.

Welcome to our world Andy. Since you already have 5 bolts in the rear, you may as well upgrade the front brakes to disks and add 5 bolts at the same time. That way you will have a much larger choice of wheels. If you look on top of the classic section you will see a FAQ. Click on that then scroll down to the brake section and read all about how to convert to disk brakes.

This isnt your only choice, but the smartest one.
Thanks for the info. So I have drum brakes in the front and should upgrade to disc? I did a quick search on conversion kits and some of them are pricy- $1500 range. Does anyone have any recomendations on kits that are solid but some what more reasonable in price.
So the lines running to the rear are just for the e-brake?

Look in the FAQ (up top in the sticky section of the forum) and find the Granada brake swap write up. Looks to be pretty cheap ($300-$500) and fairly straight-forward. Unless you are making a race car or seriously high horsepower, you don't need those pricey brakes.
